Wood With Strings: Binding Complete - Well, Almost.

http://woodwithstrings.blogspot.com/2014/12/binding-complete-well-almost.html

Thursday, December 18, 2014. Binding Complete - Well, Almost. With spare time in short supply, any progress I do manage to make seems significant. The cutaway is not yet bound, and there's plenty of scraping and sanding to do but - what the heck - here's where I'm at! East Indian Rosewood/European Spruce Modified OM. Labels: Binding and purfling. Location: Perth WA, Australia. Binding Complete - Well, Almost. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Claro Walnut/Sitka Spruce 000.

Wood With Strings: March 2015

http://woodwithstrings.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 29, 2015. There are several handy gauges and gadgets available that help the guitar builder determine the position of the bridge, but the method I've adopted works well enough that I haven't felt the need to try them out. To give credit where it's due, I believe I first saw the method I'm about to describe on Matt Mustapick's. Now defunct and sorely missed workshop blog. The underside of the bridge has been sanded to conform to the dome of the soundboard, initally using a domed platform to ...

Wood With Strings: October 2014

http://woodwithstrings.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 14, 2014. Lutherie, and the Life-Cycle of the Guitar. While the beginning and end points of the guitar-building process can be clearly defined, it's instructive - not to mention humbling - to reflect on the fact that the work of a guitar builder represents only the first stage in the life of the guitar. If we acknowledge that the luthier's weeks or months of toil serves only to produce a tool whose ultimate purpose is to produce music (hopefully beautiful music! Links to this post. Molna...

Wood With Strings: Pop Goes the Rosewood!

http://woodwithstrings.blogspot.com/2015/03/pop-goes-rosewood.html

Sunday, March 15, 2015. Pop Goes the Rosewood! I know it's unfashionable in some quarters to get too enthusiastic about East Indian Rosewood, but after applying a first coat of epoxy pore-fill to the back of this guitar, I feel justified in getting just a little bit excited. Let's hope it sounds as good as it looks! Labels: Euro Spruce/East Indian Rosewood Mod OM. Location: Perth WA, Australia. Pop Goes the Rosewood! Euro Spruce/East Indian Rosewood Mod OM Finishing. Thursday, May 15, 2014. Rosewood/European Spruce Mod OM Progress. I was building up some momentum with my guitar-building adventures until recently, but a short overseas holiday and an impending interstate trip are temporarily slowing progress. Nevertheless, I have at least managed to attach the top on my East Indian Rosewood/European Spruce guitar, and have make good progress with the neck. Links to this post. Wood With Strings: Reaching the Finish Line - KTM-SV

http://woodwithstrings.blogspot.com/2010/02/reaching-finish-line.html

Friday, July 16, 2010. Reaching the Finish Line - KTM-SV. I've made significant advances with many aspects of guitar construction in the recent past, but achieving a quality finish has proven to be a persistent frustration as well as one of the last major hurdles. It's especially pleasing then to be able to report that the finish used on this guitar - Grafted Coatings' KTM-SV. Has proven to be a watershed where confidence in the standard of my guitars is concerned. Back and sides: Australian blackwood.

Wood With Strings: Binding and End Graft Preparation

http://woodwithstrings.blogspot.com/2015/01/binding-and-end-graft-preparation.html

Monday, January 19, 2015. Binding and End Graft Preparation. I attach the black and white side purfling strips to the ebony bindings with Titebond 3, a glue that's much more resistant to heat and moisture than the regular Titebond I rely on for so many other guitar-building tasks. The clamps I use when gluing kerfed linings to the sides come in handy for this task too. If only I owned enough to prepare more than one binding strip at a time - tedious! Guitar builders, I don't particularly enjoy the task o...

Wood With Strings: July 2014

http://woodwithstrings.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 27, 2014. The World's Longest Apprenticeship. Finding a finish material I could apply safely and to a satisfactory standard has been a hurdle I feel I've at last negotiated, and as I look ahead with visions of reducing the hours I spend in a "normal" job, I have high hopes that the sale of my guitars can at least supplement my income and give me a creative outlet. Hopefully, I'll have something other than idle thoughts to share with you soon! Links to this post. Location: Perth WA, Australia.

Wood With Strings: January 2015

http://woodwithstrings.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 23, 2015. Progress - Slow, But Relentless. Despite my slow progress, I'm pretty happy with the way this one's shaping up and amazed - yet again - how completing the gluing of the bindings restores the resonance that's lost when the channels for the purfling and bindings are routed. Welcome to my workshop where your instrument will get healed, rejuvenated and back into your hands in happy harmony. I also buy and sell double bass, guitar, fiddle, mandolin and more. You’re going to find some great stuff here, and it’s more than competitively priced. I don’t find much time to make instruments right now, but the discipline and experience of 37 years of making guitars and violins comes in handy in making new parts when needed. I will also consider commissions for custom instruments.
