The Magic School Bus

The Magic School Bus. Thursday, September 20, 2007. Earlier studies have indicated that a gene called FOXP2, possibly involved in brain development, is extremely conserved in vertebrates, except for two notable mutations in humans. This finding suggested that this gene may in some way be involved in the evolution of language, and was thus dubbed by the popular press "the language" gene. See, for instance, this. This week, a new study. Jonah Lehrer notes that the same mutation that in humans eliminates ab...

The Magic School Bus: April 2006

http://themagicschoolbus.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

The Magic School Bus. Saturday, April 29, 2006. Science and the classroom. From the lab to the classroom:. Comes an interesting article (pdf). About a meeting between neuroscientists and teachers. Apparently, a lot of brain science used in pedagogy these days is bogus, yet new stuff either does not exist or is not well known or is not implemented. Turning a classroom into a computer:. The Magic School Bus: From Genes To Traits: How Genotype Affects Phenotype

http://themagicschoolbus.blogspot.com/2006/05/from-genes-to-traits-how-genotype.html

The Magic School Bus. Monday, May 15, 2006. From Genes To Traits: How Genotype Affects Phenotype. How Genotype Affects Phenotype. BIO101 - Bora Zivkovic - Lecture 2 - Part 3. One often hears news reports about discoveries of a "gene for X", e.g., gene for alcoholism, gene for homosexuality, gene for breast cancer, etc. This is an incorrect way of thinking about genes, as it implies a one-to-one mapping between genes and traits. Protein results in sickle-cell anemia. Due to such dramatic effects of small ...

The Magic School Bus: What Creatures Do: Animal Behavior

http://themagicschoolbus.blogspot.com/2006/05/what-creatures-do-animal-behavior.html

The Magic School Bus. Saturday, May 20, 2006. What Creatures Do: Animal Behavior. BIO101 - Bora Zivkovic - Lecture 3 - Part 1. Imagine that you are a zebra, grazing in the savannah. Suddenly, you smell a lion. A moment later, you hear a lion approaching and, out of the corner of your eye, you see the lion running towards you. You start running away, of course. How does that happen? In short, that is behavior and it can be schematically depicted like this:. A fungus (seen as fine white fuzz on manure), sh...

http://sciencepolitics.blogspot.com/2007/09/last-paper-by-steve-irwin.html

Wednesday, September 26, 2007. Last paper by Steve Irwin! Just published about an hour ago (if it was in hardcopy, it would still be hot off the presses). And it is a wonderful paper! Australian crocs can and will travel much longer distances than was previously thought and their homing instinct is strong and navigational capacity excellent, even in a case where a large obstacle (Cape York Peninsula) needed to be navigated around. Can you imagine anyone doing this work without Steve Irwin? I Also Post At.

The Opinionated Homeschooler: April 2006

http://opinionatedhomeschooler.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

Saturday, April 22, 2006. Depressed this morning to see that Fr. Al Kimel. Has bought into the idea that the word "Easter" is a horrible pagan holdover that ought to be junked. As fans of Alexander Hislop, Jack Chick, and the endlessly churned-out empire of fake history know, the word. Is proof that the holiday is actually worship of the fertility goddess Eostra/Austron, who is one and the same as Astarte, and before her, Ishtar, and. http://sciencepolitics.blogspot.com/2005/05/why-have-book-if-you-never-read-it.html

Wednesday, May 18, 2005. Why have a book if you never read it? About 92 percent of American own at least one copy of the Bible. The average household has 3 copies. About 67 percent of Americans say that the Bible holds the answers to the basic questions of life. The Bible is the world's all-time best seller. At least 20 million copies are sold each year. Gideon International annually distributes more than 45 million copies. Biblical knowledge (Biblical illiteracy is rampant):. Can we step in and provide ...
