The Mommy Brain by Katherine Ellison

Journalist Katherine Ellison draws on cutting-edge neuroscience research to demonstrate that, contrary to long-established wisdom that having children dumbs you down, raising children may make moms smarter. From enhanced senses in pregnancy and early motherhood to the alertness and memory skills necessary to manage like a pro, to a greater aptitude for risk-taking and a talent for empathy and negotiation, these advantages not only help mothers in raising their children, but in their work and social lives as

J's Corner: August 2008

http://jscorner101.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 28, 2008. Well, summer is quickly drawing to a close. School is starting. Bria and I joined girl scouts. CJ will start a little art class (his "school" week will consist of one art class, a tumbling class, and trips to the library.) Emelie will start preparing to return home. and we'll all start preparing to bring another au pair into the family this Fall! Chris and I both will be searching for and starting new job assignments. Ugh! But I was egged on by Bria and CJ! A bad cough for a we...

J's Corner: July 2008

http://jscorner101.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 24, 2008. Myrtle Beach '08 (w/video). We just returned from a wonderful trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. Of course we took tons of pictures! These are just a few we took with our "expensive" camera. it fogged up a lot. Go figure! We filled two disposable cameras with even more pics but haven't gotten them developed yet! We spent the week with our friends who had 3 kids the same ages as Bria and CJ. We had an adults' tent which housed the chairs, snacks, towels etc. I even got to ride some waves!

J's Corner: March 2008

http://jscorner101.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 30, 2008. Bria attended the cutest birthday party this weekend. It was a mock-sleepover/pajama party. Just 6 little girls, pizza, cake, ice cream, and a movie! After the birthday girl opened her presents, they all changed into their PJs and snuggled together on the floor with lots of pillows and blankets to watch "Barbie in the Twelve Dancing Princesses". They alternately danced and giggled and snuggled! It was just the right size and soooo much fun! I'm only sorry I didn't bring my camera!

J's Corner: Bria's Got A Wiggly Tooth!

http://jscorner101.blogspot.com/2009/03/brias-got-wiggly-tooth.html

Saturday, March 28, 2009. Bria's Got A Wiggly Tooth! It's been getting steadily looser all week. We thought it would be out by now but she's holding onto it! I also noticed that the gap where the wiggly tooth is keeps getting wider. I guess the adult tooth is pushing up fast. That and Bria keeps putting her tongue into the gap to wiggle her tooth. We've already made a special tooth fairy box and Bria takes it to school everyday just in case her tooth comes out away from home. Bria Lost Her First Tooth!

http://jscorner101.blogspot.com/2009/03/happy-st-pats.html

Monday, March 23, 2009. Happy St. Pat's. Here are some cute photos of the kids on St. Patrick's Day. Bria organized a leprechaun hunt in the back yard after school. Unfortunately, I had to work late so I missed it. But I enjoyed the pics! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Bria Lost Her First Tooth! Brias Got A Wiggly Tooth! Happy St. Pats. J's Corner: May 2008

http://jscorner101.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 22, 2008. It's too late at night to write much. I'll provide more text later this weekend. But I thought you'd enjoy seeing some pics we took on picture day for Bria's ballet class. All the kids were so pretty with their hair and makeup and costumes. CJ was sooo amazed at his ballerina sister! He just wanted to hug and kiss her constantly! I love this last picture! Friday, May 9, 2008. A typical evening after work! The resolution on these isn't great but I thought they were cute. Here's a f...

J's Corner: Bria asks "Why?"... CJ asks "Why Not?"

http://jscorner101.blogspot.com/2009/03/bria-asks-why-cj-asks-why-not.html

Monday, March 16, 2009. CJ asks "Why Not? I've noticed a core difference between my two kids. which I suppose shouldn't be so surprising but it surprised me all the same. Bria is rules driven; typical first born girl; she wants to know why we are and aren't supposed to do things and she wants to know what the reason for each thing in her world is. before she sticks her neck out and takes a risk. Thus she asks "Why? And "What is insurance Mommy? CJ don't throw your toys down the steps" "Why not? Going to ...

J's Corner: April 2008

http://jscorner101.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 24, 2008. Rest In Peace Uncle Allen. We said goodbye to my Uncle, my father's little brother, this week. He died Friday morning and was buried yesterday. He was 64. It's a little ironic that my grandparents and both of their sons all went within a 6 year span of time. It seems too fast. Family was always important to my grandparents, my father and my uncle. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Rest In Peace Uncle Allen. I'm on a never ending quest to strike that balance between work and family.

Sunday, June 15, 2008. CJ, let's pretend that I'm the baby alien and you're the Daddy. OK? But CJ, CJ. You can be SUPER-DADDY-ALIEN! Now pretend this is the hot lava and you have to come save me. meep meep meeeeeep". Don worry. I save you! Happy Friday the 13th! Wednesday, June 11, 2008. The Rehearsal Video Clip is Here! Bria finally had her dance recital this past weekend! It was a first for both of us and I think Bria faired much better than I did! Their costumes were BEAUTIFUL! She did very, very well!

Living with the little pea

Living with the little pea. Friday, 20 September 2013. Rough first night. Little P outlasted the sleep consultant's estimate by a good half hour. I sat in the kitchen, hands shaking, decoupaging laundry clips, downing glasses of wine, eating too much carbs, while anxiously watching the whole thing unfold on the baby monitor. I would have buckled if I was the one in the room with pnut. His sad cries would have destroyed any conviction I had. Fingers crossed tomorrow is a better day. My husband realized at...

The "Mommy Book"

Mommy Arts and Crafts. Wednesday, 24 December 2014. 8220;A Story of Christmas”. Dr Amparito Llamas-Lhuillier reads “A Story of Christmas” to the children. (Photos by Richard Ramos). As a mother of two growing boys, I am extremely particular on the adage that reading is a must for self-development. So despite going home from a busy day at work tired and wanting sleep, I try my best to have the will and want to read a book at bedtime. Four of Madame Amparito Lhuillier’s grandchildren (left to right) ...

Wednesday, July 9, 2014. I made this Bacon Skillet Corn to go perfectly with the Glazed Pork Chops. I started with can of corn, yep, a CAN of corn. Next, I chopped up one whole green bell pepper and one whole yellow onion. Of course, my little guy always steps in the help his mama out in the kitchen! I cooked 6 slices of bacon in the microwave. We have a bacon tray for the microwave. I cooked it as usual (3 minute increments until done with a paper towel over top to absorb some more grease). Nothing is a...

My family is my ministry and this life is my calling! Studies Through Scripture Plan. Trust is a tricky thing. July 23, 2015. I used to give trust freely with no regard to who and how. There was no why or why not. It just was. I believed that it was something one should automatically receive unless they proved otherwise. And then when they proved otherwise, I felt they deserved another chance. And another. I want people to prove me wrong. To not be as bad as everyone says. I want to forgive and forget.

Any reason, every season . . . Hmmm what do moms really need? More advice on time management? Another self-help book on some obscure aspect of successful parenting? A color-coded laundry basket system? A PDA duct-taped to the dashboard of the SUV? A universal remote that will control chaos in a click? Kids equipped with a forehead-implanted emotional GPS system providing visual warning of prevailing conditions in an easily recognizable STOP/CAUTION/GO format?
