A closer look at the wild things in a New England back yard and beyond. Tuesday, March 20, 2012. It's that time of year again when salamanders and wood frogs head to vernal pools and spring peepers fill the air with their chorusing. We had no luck finding migrating spotted salamanders at night, but did find quite a few under logs during the day. These three were all tucked away under the same log. Just a few feet away, there were plenty of eggs in the pool. Other finds included two water scorpions. Hawks...

A closer look at the wild things in a New England back yard and beyond. Saturday, April 7, 2012. This week I was lucky to catch a glimpse of two species of birds that I don't see too often. During breakfast just a couple of days ago, a couple of large brown objects swooped by the sliding glass doors, over the deck landing in the neighboring yard. Three wild turkeys. Had come for an easy meal under the bird feeder before heading off into the woods. The tom was enormous. Links to this post. CSI: Getting Gl...

A blog about urban ecology, environmental science generally, energy issues, modern naturalism, and what it means to be a mostly hairless primate in a world dominated by the same. Sunday, September 25, 2011. Good News, Bad News. One of the drawbacks of working in an environmental field and paying attention to the news in these fields, is that you don't often come into contact with much in the way of good news. In the last few weeks, the Franklin's Bumblebee ( Bombus franklini. They look like this. It's di...

A blog about urban ecology, environmental science generally, energy issues, modern naturalism, and what it means to be a mostly hairless primate in a world dominated by the same. Friday, November 8, 2013. Hello again, kiddos. Been a while, hasn't it? I have been quite busy PhDing, and in particular working on an NSF grant. Exciting times. I do have several blog posts I want to write, on the illusion of linearity in human systems, and other things. Today, however, I created my ORCID account.

Tuesday, March 26, 2013. So I haven't posted in rather a long while. Mostly because I graduated from my Master's program, got married, was busy working on research, crammed everything I owned into a remarkably small steel box, and then moved across the country with two cats. Did I mention I don't drive? I do have an amazing wife.

Monday, December 9, 2013. Journals, Open Access, and the Cost of Knowledge. An article on slashdot. Brought to my attention that Elsevier- Academic Publisher and Intellectual Gangster- is going after authors for sharing their own work. Of many publishers are like, I was appalled (note, they have improved, slightly, since then).

A blog about urban ecology, environmental science generally, energy issues, modern naturalism, and what it means to be a mostly hairless primate in a world dominated by the same. Wednesday, October 5, 2011. Today has been a day of themes emerging from the apparent randomness of the various talks. One hopes that this was planned by the organizers, but one never really knows. Behave and make decisions. Tastes better than wine we think is cheap. We engage in conspicuous consumption. Another interesting fact...

The Natural Mum
Wednesday, 9 January 2013. Home made play dough recipe. Kids love play dough. I can still remember watching while my Mum cooked up play dough, impatiently waited for it to cool, then spent hours making and creating all sorts of fun things. Naturally I want to repeat this with my girls, so I dug out the play dough recipe, sat little missy on the bench, and got cooking. This recipe is made from ingredients in your pantry. Its totally non-toxic, and cheaper than the commercial variety. Links to this post.

Most recently I have done carrot and corriander, french onion and potato and leek. Stephanie went on a bushcraft trip and brought me home some freshly picked wild garlic, so I decided to make a soup with it. It is by far my favourite soup so far. 2 tablespoons olive oil. Handful of wild garlic with flowers. 1 cup vegetable stock. Half cup of double cream. Sprig of parsley to garnish.

The Natural Mystic | Making mistakes is part of life's imperfections
Making mistakes is part of life's imperfections. I am here…um, no, not quite yet. My bedroom, living and dinning rooms must have a Tuscan vibe. I think its because my decor leans towards bohemian and Tuscan is what my mind tells me is bohemian. The other rooms can be Independent and carry on different conversations since I don’t spend as much as time in them as I do in my living spaces. Yes, I am thinking the same thing…blank canvas. This is good you say, no? Okay, you get my point? February 23rd, 2012.
