Robin LaFevers: Writing is a Harsh Mistress
http://robinlafevers.blogspot.com/2011/04/writing-is-harsh-mistress.html
Saturday, April 2, 2011. Writing is a Harsh Mistress. I was cleaning up a pile of papers that has sat next to my computer for ever. And stumbled upon this quote that I'd printed out. I had not made a note of where it came from, so spent half an hour googling and searching and found out that, of course! It was from the brilliant Barbara Samuel/. Yes This. Every time I read this I am reminded that I truly must give everything to the page in order to produce my best work. I shudder to think. Writing is a Ha...

But also, as I struggle to hear the faint glimmerings of these new characters in my head, I need to tune out some of the voices on the outside because that noise and commotion draws too much of my attention. When I turn down the volume of the external world, it is much easier for me to hear my emerging characters. So I am alive and well, just…pensive. And quiet. Links to this post. GRAVE MERCY coming...

Book 30 - The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Steig Larsson. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. 576 pages in 15 days. Third book in "The Girl Who" trilogy came out in mid-May and I couldn't help myself - I pre. Ordered the book. The third book picks right up where Book 2 (. The Girl Who Played with Fire. As the one carrying water in this story but it's pretty clear that once she's removed from the story, it's easy to be bogged down in the minutiae of the plotline. Is clearly a journalist and it ...

The Science of Free Will - R.L. LaFevers
http://rllafevers.livejournal.com/35481.html
The Science of Free Will. March 29th, 2011. As a writer, one of the things I am most fascinated by is human behavior, the choices we make, why we make them, what calls or pushes us to one action and prevents us from making another. What drives the human psyche? Because the truth is, our preciously held and highly valued ability to make free, independent decisions might not be as clear-cut as we thought. With the work of Freud and Jung, much of what had once seemed like willful bad choices or evil, now ha...

A Whopping Dose of Random - R.L. LaFevers
http://rllafevers.livejournal.com/35102.html
A Whopping Dose of Random. March 11th, 2011. I also happened to notice my chiropractor's hands today. He's a big, burly guy- a record holding power lifter and it shows in his hands. They actually reminded me a lot of my husband's hands, who has worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for a number of years. I realized that made a strange sort of sense since a chiropractor is pretty much a mechanic of the human body. I feel a number of contests and giveaways coming soon. 2011-03-12 03:36 pm (UTC). Yay for all...

Some Thoughts On Historical Accuracy - R.L. LaFevers
http://rllafevers.livejournal.com/33899.html
Some Thoughts On Historical Accuracy. January 26th, 2011. I have been thinking a lot about historical accuracy as I work on these medieval French assassin books. Lucy had asked (quite a while ago—sorry Lucy! If I would talk about historical accuracy on the blog, and since I was discussing historical research in general, I thought it would be a good time to address it. So which does a writer choose? The one that serves the story they are trying to tell. You begin to see the complexity. What I am doing for...

Looking For Themes In All The Wrong Places - R.L. LaFevers
http://rllafevers.livejournal.com/35940.html
Looking For Themes In All The Wrong Places. May 24th, 2011. I was going to come back here and tell you all how I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had two seconds to rub together, let alone time to blog, but you know what? You all are smart cookies. I bet you figured that out on your own. Plus? It is fairly boring to talk about. So instead I thought I’d talk about something that’s been occupying quite a lot of my mental space lately, namely themes. As in the core themes of our work. What will they be? Learn...
