The New York Escapist: August 2013
http://nyescapist.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
The New York Escapist. Escaping out of and into New York City. Sunday, August 4, 2013. Bushkill Falls: Waterfall hiking less than 2 hours from NYC. The main waterfall is right at the beginning of all the trailheads, so if you aren't much a hiker you can see the big falls right away. But I highly recommend taking the time to meander through the Swiss Family Robinson-esque staircases to view the falls from other vantage points, and then embark on one of the 3 main hikes. Ferns lots of 'em. In the cute town...

The New York Escapist. Escaping out of and into New York City. Monday, August 23, 2010. Gigantic Pool in Red Hook. So there's a gigantic pool. In Red Hook with hardly anyone in it. And there are only two weekends left in the summer to take advantage of it. Get there! Bike (6 miles from the West Village via BK bridge), take the NY Water Taxi. Or hop on the F train and get off at Smith - 9th street. Afterward, we couldn't resist a repeat of The Lobster Pound and Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pie. Offer plenty...

The New York Escapist. Escaping out of and into New York City. Thursday, March 1, 2012. Beacon, Take 2. About a year and a half ago, I went to Beacon in the Hudson Valley for the first time (initial post here. 1996-2000 (Image from Dia). My friend Kristin joined me, and fell in love with Sol LeWitt's work - a series of full wall drawings of geometric shapes. Also liked these installations, but realized at this point that no photography was allowed. so this is my last photo! The New York Escapist.

The New York Escapist: July 2010

The New York Escapist. Escaping out of and into New York City. Saturday, July 24, 2010. Lobster Rolls and Key Lime Pie in Red Hook. When you think of Red Hook, your first thought might be deserted warehouses, lack of subway access and IKEA. But Red Hook is so much more - it's a relaxed neighborhood full of culinary delights, good bars and scenic spots to chill out overlooking the water. Manned by this kid who was not afraid to dive right into the lobster tank to show us dinner. The Key Lime Pie was amazi...

The New York Escapist: December 2010

The New York Escapist. Escaping out of and into New York City. Thursday, December 2, 2010. Blue Grass Brunch and Museum Madness. It's easy to fall into the brunch and shopping routine on weekends in NYC. Not that this is a bad thing, but sometimes it's nice to check out some of the city's cultural attractions (isn't that why we say we live in New York? Spending Thanksgiving in the city gave me a few extra days to take advantage of some things I don't always have time for. MoMA has not only an incredible ...

The New York Escapist. Escaping out of and into New York City. Sunday, July 8, 2012. Norwalk Islands: Your own private beach near NYC! Recently, we discovered where to have your own private beach near NYC! I almost hesitate to publish this because it was so remote and wonderful. But. it's your lucky day, if you are willing to embark on a rigorous kayak journey to get there. Calf Pasture Beach looked pretty nice and not too crowded - and you can rent chairs for $5! There was a nice burger joint and clean ...

The New York Escapist: June 2010
http://nyescapist.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
The New York Escapist. Escaping out of and into New York City. Sunday, June 20, 2010. Kayaking in Cold Spring. Getting hooked up with kayaks (put your stuff in a plastic bag and you can store it in the kayak). The scenery is beautiful, and the bay is calm and easy for beginner kayakers like myself. You can also kayak in Constitution Marsh - enter under a very low bridge to get there. We kind of had to duck to fit under since it was getting close to high tide. Anyone have any additional Cold Spring tips?

The New York Escapist: November 2011
http://nyescapist.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
The New York Escapist. Escaping out of and into New York City. Saturday, November 12, 2011. A few weeks ago we wanted a mini-escape that didn't require too much effort, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Was the perfect spot. It's on the northeastern corner of Prospect Park, right by the 2/3/4/5 trains. Despite having a lot of friends who live near it, I haven't heard of many actually checking it out. It's a hot spot for weddings, koi fish feeding and alligator spotting. To end the day, we bought a new hou...

The New York Escapist: January 2011
http://nyescapist.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
The New York Escapist. Escaping out of and into New York City. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. Cross-Country Skiing at Fahnestock. We headed up north to Fahnestock Winter Park. About an hour and twenty minutes north of the city, near Cold Spring. Boots, skis and shoeshoes are available for rental at the park, but they can run out of boots in certain sizes so I advise getting there before noon, especially on a holiday weekend. Small hill in woods - harder than it looks. The New York Escapist. NYC Things to Do.
