The Portland Naturalist

Friday, 5 June 2015. Outer Hebrides - Day 6 7. We awoke on our last morning on North Uist to the still astonishing sound of Corncrake,. Before heading for the early Ferry. The ferry terminal at Lochmaddy seemed an equally promising-looking area for keeping an eye on while we waited to depart, as the other side. And so it proved, with some movement on some nearby rocks turning out to be an Otter! Two of the my three UK Otter sightings have now come at Ferry terminals! Colony, loads of breeding waders (in...

The Portland Naturalist: July 2014

http://www.theportlandnaturalist.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 22 July 2014. Hope you enjoy my 100th blog post! On the 19th, I popped into the Obs in order to wonder at the amazing selection of rare moths caught overnight. Now, I realise there is something rather unsatisfying about seeing moths by coming across a table full of pots, as apposed to emptying the trap yourself (something I hope to rectify shortly! But in the absence of that opportunity I had to make do with this, and it was still fantastic to see such species. And the rare saltmarsh inhabitant,.

The Portland Naturalist: November 2014

http://www.theportlandnaturalist.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 26 November 2014. After the success of the previous week, things continued in a similar vein, very much against expectations. Was re-found by myself a few days after my initial discovery. I flushed it from the path at the back of the big horse-field along Weston Street (and I've since seen it again, at Avalanche Road). Unlike my first encounter, the bird actually hung around long enough for others to connect. Plunging through, and scattering, a flock of Redwing. A 1st-winter Velvet Scoter.

The Portland Naturalist: Outer Hebrides - Day 1

http://www.theportlandnaturalist.blogspot.com/2015/05/outer-hebrides-day-1.html

Saturday, 30 May 2015. Outer Hebrides - Day 1. On the evening of the 17th May, I met up with Matt Phelps at his home in Surrey, before driving up to stay the night near Carlisle. I really was expecting to require all of the 5 days to try and catch up with them. We took a relaxed attitude to getting going the next morning, and as a result, lost the chance to go for the Aberdeen Harlequin Duck - it ended up leaving the day before we got our last chance to make the twitch, on our journey home! And a singing...

The Portland Naturalist: March 2015

http://www.theportlandnaturalist.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Monday, 30 March 2015. Two weeks of largely patch birding on Portland have produced a few highlights, but overall a lot less than is to be expected at this time, particularly from common migrants. There may not be many around, but there's nothing like a spring male Wheatear. To bring a smile to your face after a long winter. Over Ferrybridge on the 15th, a Siskin. North over with a group of Meadow Pipit. On the 17th, a brief Sandwich Tern. Along the beach on the 23rd, a pair of Tufted Duck. Hopping about...
