The Quirky Teacher – The Quirky Teacher
https://thequirkyteacher.wordpress.com/author/thequirkyteacher
Supporter of traditional education. Author: The Quirky Teacher. What if….there were fewer nutty people in teaching. November 6, 2016. November 6, 2016. Classrooms, I wondered whether I was the first, and possibly the last, person in the history of mankind to tell a joke at a primary school staff meeting. Would you have wanted to write weird in-your-face learning objectives that seem to be nothing to do with the content when a simple title would sometimes suffice? Further, the blogosphere seems to be domi...
Boys need a different EYFS curriculum – The Quirky Teacher
https://thequirkyteacher.wordpress.com/2015/06/30/boys-need-a-different-eyfs-curriculum
Supporter of traditional education. Boys need a different EYFS curriculum. June 30, 2015. October 23, 2016. Thank goodness for assessments, otherwise we wouldn’t know how *wonderful* the EYFS curriculum was for young males. All instruction for literacy and numeracy to be direct and explicit rather than discovery/play-based. 8216;Play’ only to be used to consolidate learning, or (and here’s a novel thought that will blow your minds) for actual fun. A clear distinction being drawn between toys and items us...
The Quirky Teacher – Page 2 – Supporter of traditional education
https://thequirkyteacher.wordpress.com/page/2
Supporter of traditional education. Every minute counts. Except when it doesn’t. October 19, 2016. Is it just me who is feeling a little too rushed? Well, the upshot of having to teach so many subjects in so little time, coupled with the expectation that children are always on task/learning 100% of the time, is that there is also an expectation that lesson changes and transitions in the classroom happen in seconds. Like, BAM! Suddenly we’re doing a 20 minute Geography lesson. The reality? October 16, 2016.

Metro maps . . . | Luddite with a Laptop
https://mrpjmerrell.wordpress.com/2014/05/27/metro-maps
Luddite with a Laptop. Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story. Metro maps . . . Hmm – I’ve been seeing lots and lots of revision ‘metro maps’ appearing across my twitter feed over the last few weeks. I must confess, I’m not sure of their merit. I like the aesthetic, but there are very few ways I can see myself using them in the classroom. It’s all just a little . . . chaotic. However, I’m clearly in the minority here, so what do I know! 8211; to help me build this. May 27, 2014. Leave a Reply x.
No one questions what they want to believe. The problem with EPPSE – Esse Quam Videri
https://heatherfblog.wordpress.com/2015/08/08/no-one-questions-what-they-want-to-believe-the-problem-with-eppse
No one questions what they want to believe. The problem with EPPSE. August 8, 2015. August 9, 2015. Is a very large and enormously influential study commissioned by the DfE to find out what types of preschool provision and early experiences are most effective. It followed 3000 children from the age of 3 to 16 years and reaches some very significant conclusions which I would question. The research team was from the Institute of Education, Birkbeck and Oxford and as the Institute of Education blog. Brought...

TheOtherDrX's Higher Education blog. Although not exclusively Higher Education…. Black Swans: When you disprove your own hypothesis that all Swans are white. November 17, 2016. I wrote a blogpost a while back on the White Swan hypothesis, where I challenge my research students to test the hypothesis that all swans are white, as in the UK and Europe, this is a generally accepted notion. Our new marking policy makes me feel stupid | mylifeasacynicalteacher
https://mylifeasacynicalteacher.wordpress.com/2016/03/12/our-new-marking-policy-makes-me-feel-stupid
Some of thoughts on Education and the vagaries of politicians and managers. Our new marking policy makes me feel stupid. This resulted in our new “one size fits all” marking policy. I also do not completely hate the marking policy. It suits some departments very well. It is a genuine attempt to reduce workload and for us in some regards it has (Ks4 for example) in Maths. Some departments say it has made an enormous difference to their workload. Different people in the department are filling in these grid...

How outstanding is outstanding? | mylifeasacynicalteacher
https://mylifeasacynicalteacher.wordpress.com/2014/01/21/how-outstanding-is-outstanding
Some of thoughts on Education and the vagaries of politicians and managers. How outstanding is outstanding? Earlier this year I was observed teaching a lesson on fractions. I used resources and a lesson plan I have used many times before. I have been observed teaching this lesson several times. The outcome has always been a 2 or a 3. I used the lesson despite this for two reasons. The lesson went ok. I’ve taught it better before. Pupils have engaged with it better before. I agreed with ...The behavior in...

My experiences of Mocksteds | mylifeasacynicalteacher
https://mylifeasacynicalteacher.wordpress.com/2013/11/09/my-experiences-of-mocksteds
Some of thoughts on Education and the vagaries of politicians and managers. My experiences of Mocksteds. I was a supply teacher at the time. OFSTED were due so in my 3rd week they had a mock inspection. The school did not appear to have any systems in place for managing behavior. If they had policies to do with marking, planning etc then nobody told me what they were. If there was a scheme of work then nobody gave it to me. It was a highly dysfunctional school. This was at the school described here:.

Some of thoughts on Education and the vagaries of politicians and managers. My experiences as a teacher of dealing with victim blaming. I believe I am familiar with one of the types of young man who is sending Caroline Criado-Perez and Stella Creasy death threats. It’s quite likely that I have taught some of them. Here I will outline my experiences and why I believe this. From this point on when I say “boys” I do not mean ALL boys but the boys who behaved in the way I am describing). If the girls wonR...

Some of thoughts on Education and the vagaries of politicians and managers. I’m better now. Hopefully for good. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been on Twitter for any length of time or blogged. I thought I would write about why that is. This probably won’t be the best written thing I’ve ever produced. So what brought on my depression? Having too much on my plate is the simple answer. The good news is all of my exam classes got fantastic results. The school has repeatedly assured me that I am a va...

The Bigkid Taxonomy | mylifeasacynicalteacher
https://mylifeasacynicalteacher.wordpress.com/2012/08/03/the-bigkid-taxonomy
Some of thoughts on Education and the vagaries of politicians and managers. Having given it a lot of thought I have come up with my own taxonomy:. In order of level of thinking required pupils should attempt the following:. If necessary ask some intelligent questions. Do a reasonable amount of work correctly. Some pupils have fallen down at steps 1 and 3 find the “intelligent” part of step 4 difficult to achieve. They then go on to fail at steps 5 and 6. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. Wednesday, December 8, 2010. I am so, so excited to offer this to you today. You would not believe the trial and error that has gone into this DIY mercury glass technique. I could open a small paint store with all of the products that I have purchased and tried to create this amazing looking glass. And also here are some detailed instructions:. First things first make sure you wash all glass with soap and water. IMPORTANT* * * *. It can be purchased at Wal-mart, Lowes, and Jo Anns. After the little whisp...

Getting Up is Hard To Do. August 12, 2015. August 12, 2015. So, last night, I spent the night feeling spluttery, headachy and generally sorry for myself. Both girls were up during the night and I was stressed to the max. I texted Elle, asking her recommendation and (secretly) hoping she would tell me it was ok, rest up, do nothing , get better and she would see me on Sunday. Http:/ www.precisionnutrition.com/working-out-when-sick. Throughout the hour, I was hit in the face by a shoe, in a public gym, at ...

The Quirky Teacher | A big chunk of raw onion on your education salad
A big chunk of raw onion on your education salad. August 11, 2015. August 11, 2015. You know, I really feel there isn’t enough credit given to all these kind, caring people who, by virtue of having such large internet media audiences, have the courage to admonish naughty bloggers for their errant ways. I mean, if it weren’t for these people, perhaps somebody might let a swear word slip? They might even, heaven forbid, accidentally pop a swear word in the title of a published book! Just another WordPress.com site. Who we are…no really! April 19, 2012. So, I created another wordpress for all my fashion updates so that this blog can be a person blog. For my professional fashion blog, visit: http:/ vicarious-chronicles-of-a-fashion-stylist.com/. April 13, 2012. An exciting new trend I’ve spotted is the mix of stripes with floral print. I’m determined to try to pull this off, thus the inspiration for this look. The question is, are you brave enough to mix two prints? April 13, 2012.
