The Rediscovered Country

Thursday, July 30, 2015. I'm gearing up to teach a course called Introduction to Literary Interpretation this fall. It's a class for beginning literature majors, to introduce them to major concepts like "genre" and technical terms like "synedoche." One of the concepts we have to cover is "character"- round characters, flat characters, stock characters, unreliable narrators, archetypes, etc, and what qualities make characters relatable, likeable, or compelling. I have written 94 double-spaced pages of #Ju...

The Rediscovered Country: July 2014

http://www.therediscoveredcountry.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Fairy tales, bad TV, classroom ramblings, and contemporary speculative fiction . Thursday, July 10, 2014. Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel. This retelling of Hamlet,. The two places where Hewson and Hartley change the actual plot the most revolve around two relatively minor characters in Shakespeare's play: Voltemand and Yorick, respectively. In their story, the Norwegian ambassador Voltemand takes on a much larger, and more sinister, role, masterminding several of the play's many twists and turns,...

Fairy tales, bad TV, classroom ramblings, and contemporary speculative fiction . Friday, May 22, 2015. Notes from a Teenage Kate. This week I've been in Chattanooga, helping my parents clean out their house. We have disposed of:. A bouncy ball with a floating demon head inside. A home-made t-shirt imprinted with the face of a dog that wasn't ours. Empty video cassette boxes for several of Drew Barrymore's finest films. A poster of the anatomy of the heart. The first three computers my parents ever bought.

Fairy tales, bad TV, classroom ramblings, and contemporary speculative fiction . Thursday, July 30, 2015. There's always some shred of hope that what I'm teaching will bleed into my own writing. If I'm teaching about great characters, maybe it will make it easier to write a great character, right? Wrong It is not easy to write a great character, and the more I try, the more fake and cobbled-together it feels. Of my own brain, because I am finding it so difficult to write Miranda. I have written 94 double...

Chez Kristen: A Tale of Two Kings

http://oceanbreeze56.blogspot.com/2011/12/tale-of-two-kings.html

Saturday, December 03, 2011. A Tale of Two Kings. This morning I listed to a sermon about pride. King Saul and David were both mentioned as examples. (Stories in First Samuel 13 and 2 Samuel 11-12). What I find interesting is what happened next. King Saul doesn't appear to repent but instead continue further in the path of pride and eventually takes his own life and David takes his place as king. I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever." Psalms 52:8b. What can we learn from this? A Tale of Two ...

Chez Kristen: Judgement Day

http://oceanbreeze56.blogspot.com/2011/05/judgement-day.html

Saturday, May 21, 2011. I woke up this morning to the same world that was here when I fell asleep. I checked Facebook to see if anything unique had happened in another country and was greeted with a post that said something like, "It seems the end of the world is not today.". I turned to my husband and said "Oh good, looks like the world isn't ending." Instantly I regretted my words. But even as I find amusement in the sarcasm, I also feel my heart fighting against the laughter. View my complete profile.

Chez Kristen: January 2011

http://oceanbreeze56.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 08, 2011. As a Christian I have a lot of knowledge in my head about joy. And I understand many true reasons why we should have joy. We've been saved, redeemed! If God is for us, who can be against us! Jesus has prepared a place for us and is coming back one day to take us home- to a place filled with such joy- our minds can only dimly comprehend how beautiful our new home will be. Jesus loves me, this I know. How do you connect your mind with your heart? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

http://oceanbreeze56.blogspot.com/2013/02/today-i-was-reminded-of-something.html

Friday, February 08, 2013. Today I was reminded of something. I was reminded that's its normal to feel. That a part of being human is having emotions. And a part of having emotions is realizing that different days can bring out different feelings. I think that as Christians once you reach a certain level of adulthood, it can be easy to feel like we are supposed to be joyful and peaceful at all times. So any negative deviation from this can be stressful and frustrating. What's wrong with me? Also, interes...

Chez Kristen: December 2010

http://oceanbreeze56.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 31, 2010. Thoughts for the new year. I can hardly believe we've reached the end of 2010. I probably say this every year, and every year it seems true. Time continues to flow on- days turn to weeks, weeks to months, and months to years. This year I will turn 30. This doesn't seem possible. Yet when I think back on my travels, and time with family and friends, it does seem possible. I'm very grateful for the wonderful memories I've made and hope for many more!
