The Right Coast Nova Scotia

Sunday, September 18, 2011. Downtown Halifax on Canvas. This year, I was happy to be invited back to blog about Halifax for the Downtown Halifax Business Commission. Like last year, I was handed a pre-loaded $100 Visa card with three basic conditions; spend the money in downtown Halifax, blog about the experience and keep it legal (love saying that). There was one other catch - to try something new. Because kids see things differently than adults. A Canadian flag on a building nearby. See more pictures f...

Sunday, August 30, 2009. Broad Cove Campground - Cape Breton Highlands. It was 8:20 pm when we pulled into campsite #189. We were in Broad Cove and it was the first night of our three day tour of Cape Breton. The light was beginning to fade so we quickly set up camp and ate dinner. After quick showers, we crawled into our sleeping bags. No reason to stay up because there was no fire to watch- the kids made sure that we took note of this. Many It was the Cabot Trail and who knew what what around the corner.

Sunday, September 13, 2009. Joe's Scarecrows Roadside Attraction. So here we were driving along outside Cheticamp, glancing back once in awhile to say good-bye to the mountains in the distance when out of the blue, we see scarecrows. Lots of them. They were hilarious! We actually had to turn around because they demanded our attention. Put up two scarecrows dressed in funny costumes and masks. Right away, this created a road-side attraction that just kept getting bigger. I imagine the idea of havi...See m...

Friday, October 30, 2009. Friends of Taylor Head Prov. Park Society - Beyond the gate. Many of you already know that one of my favourite parks in this province is Taylor Head. I am not alone. One time, Taylor Head was only open from May - October. Thanksgiving weekend meant a drive "down the head" for one last time before the gate was locked for the season. One time. The friends organize programming in the park during the summer months. From watercolour clinics to guided bird walks to astronomy night...

The Right Coast Nova Scotia: Help me plan BC Brian's 45 hour visit to Halifax

http://therightcoastnovascotia.blogspot.com/2010/06/help-me-plan-bc-brians-45-hour-visit-to.html

Wednesday, June 9, 2010. Help me plan BC Brian's 45 hour visit to Halifax. A few weeks ago I got a phone call from my friend "BC Brian" announcing that he's visiting me in Halifax. Hailing from northwestern British Columbia, this is his first trip to the east coast. After looking at the calendar, I realized that I have 45 hours to give BC Brian a favourable impression of Halifax. This is where I'm asking for your advice, your thoughts. your do's and don't's. Let's factor in the 4 hour time difference.

Essays from East Lawrencetown: June 2010

http://sadpercy.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Essays from East Lawrencetown. A Nova Scotia blog. Monday, June 21, 2010. Himself is home. And not working nights, which is not home, as far as I`m concerned. Let the normal times begin for the first time since February. For a while at least! Monday, June 21, 2010. Friday, June 18, 2010. Hoping for a white hot summer. It’s after eight pm and it’s still thirty degrees. Even though it’s only June. Everyone is hoping this will be one of those summers. We haven’t had one for a while. And when the sun went do...

Essays from East Lawrencetown: The wearing of the poppy

http://sadpercy.blogspot.com/2011/11/wearing-of-poppy.html

Essays from East Lawrencetown. A Nova Scotia blog. Friday, November 11, 2011. The wearing of the poppy. The many faces of Remembrance Day. Here, where there was no war, just commerce and volunteering for service overseas, it is a very sombre week, everyone wears poppies and it is full of ceremonies remembering all the soldiers who fought in WW1 and WW2 (and others of course). (it is also a big drunk for many). It was a defining issue for the young country of Canada. Friday, November 11, 2011. East Coast ...

Essays from East Lawrencetown: To Libya with love

http://sadpercy.blogspot.com/2011/02/to-libya-with-love.html

Essays from East Lawrencetown. A Nova Scotia blog. Tuesday, February 22, 2011. To Libya with love. We see the carnage on Twitter. We want it to stop. As Western Europeans/ North Americans, we reach for the tools to do that. Call on Obama. Email the EU Commission. March on the embassy. Campaign to motivate NATO. I am reading Amin Maalouf's " The Crusades through Arab Eyes". It is as gut-wrenching as the photos I am clicking through on Twitter. Disembowellment. Siege. Starvation. So here's the thing. Maybe...

Essays from East Lawrencetown: Yes, it's all really funny till someone gets hurt

http://sadpercy.blogspot.com/2010/08/yes-its-all-really-funny-till-someone.html

Essays from East Lawrencetown. A Nova Scotia blog. Thursday, August 05, 2010. Yes, it's all really funny till someone gets hurt. Smart ass anti-baby comedy sketches inc. So we were talking about it this evening, in that part of the evening when we stand in the kitchen after work drinking tea and telling each other what really just friggin' sucked. None of us could believe it. Himself couldn't believe it. And he doesn't even know them. And then they get SHAFTED by some bureaucrat today. In Ireland, you ha...

Essays from East Lawrencetown: July 2010

http://sadpercy.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Essays from East Lawrencetown. A Nova Scotia blog. Thursday, July 29, 2010. On Reading Coetzee's Elizabeth Costello. I have been reading Coetzee again. As usual, I have only the faintest idea what the novel is about. It takes me a while with Coetzee usually. She is accompanied by her increasingly bemused physicist son. (Coetzee is a mathematician by trade). Who presumably represents the poor reader. This is what the Telegraph. Andrew Marr) said about it:. In the end, as his heroine confronts death, he ha...

Essays from East Lawrencetown: Mothered by a warm breeze

http://sadpercy.blogspot.com/2010/08/mothered-by-warm-breeze.html

Essays from East Lawrencetown. A Nova Scotia blog. Monday, August 16, 2010. Mothered by a warm breeze. Tired and flat and hiccupy after an enervating week and too much emotion, I managed to force myself to put the cleaning rag down and sit out on the deck in the darkness for ten minutes. I was rewarded by a warm breeze cooling me off, playing a soft melody on the pewter wind chimes. And crickets. I will not have a meltdown and spoil what's left of you. Because you won't let me, will you.

http://sadpercy.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Essays from East Lawrencetown. A Nova Scotia blog. Thursday, December 02, 2010. Rerun of Dear Dublin. I found this on a blog I contributed to in July, 2009. Almost eighteen months ago! It is strange to me that it is still relevant. Maybe the hiatus, the fear, can be lifted soon and we can all move on. There was a lot of politics in Ireland back then. Come on now ladies and gentlemen! Have ye no homes to go to! Enough talking lads, there’s money to be made…. let’s get to work. We ran riot on the Nasdaq.
