The Science Salon

Monday, May 14, 2012. Do you ever have an 'aha' moment when someone describes to you very well how something works? Sometimes that happens to me. “I get it now! 8221; Then I go back and try to learn/do it for myself and realize I still don't get it. I only thought I did. I still have to go back and do more work for myself to grasp the concept. Is it okay for a science writer to impart an 'illusion of understanding' to the generalist reader? The same is true for describing scientific processes. Someon...

The Science Salon: May 2011

http://thesciencesalon.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 18, 2011. Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman! Richard Feynman was that rare combination of genius and accessibility to the non-physicist. If there was one thing he was confident in it was sitting down with a seemingly impossible puzzle until he solved it. He also played the bongos, told funny stories, and pulled a great poker face on the (in)appropriate occasion. If you read any of his stories from the book "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! I recommend Safecracker Meets Safecracker. An ex...

The Science Salon: Science writing in beautiful Santa Fe

http://thesciencesalon.blogspot.com/2012/05/science-writing-in-beautiful-santa-fe.html

Monday, May 7, 2012. Science writing in beautiful Santa Fe. My science writing mentor at UCR has raved about the Santa Fe Science Writing Workshop, and now I'm in Santa Fe to experience it for myself! My plane landed in Albuquerque after lots of turbulence from strong winds. On the ride from Albuquerque to Santa Fe the car was swaying from all the wind. Scary! You can imagine how the last person in the circle felt. I'm not one to memorize names, which is part of the appeal of being a physics major&#4...

The Science Salon: Depressing study shows people are depressed

http://thesciencesalon.blogspot.com/2011/09/depressing-study-shows-people-are.html

Monday, September 5, 2011. Depressing study shows people are depressed. Do studies predict the worst? In Nature’s Trend Watch. Last week the prevalence of obesity in the US and the UK is projected to grow from 32% in 2007-08 to 50% in 2030 for men, and from 35% to 45% for women. One obese person out of three people seems high enough as it is. But one out of two people is just…depressing. Another study in Nature. I’ll go be happy now and distract myself on Youtube. The Science Salon: January 2012

http://thesciencesalon.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, January 11, 2012. Science teaching tools that work. When learning physics, you pick up math skills. But there's a problem when students only learn how to choose equations and plug in the right numbers. The “plug and chug” questions you see on physics tests are of the easier variety. The hard questions are qualitative and conceptual. Here is an example of a basic conceptual physics question I saw from NPR. A) Ball B hits the ground first. B) Ball A hits the ground first. According to Mazur, the...

Pirate Adventures with Math. Puzzle no.1: The Banker and the Gold. Puzzle no.2: The Island Natives Anne, Belle, and Chuck. Puzzle no.3: The Tiger and the Treehouse. Puzzle no.1: The Banker and the Gold. A pirate with a murky past stands on the deck to look out over the ocean. Nothing can be seen but rolling blue water in every direction. He shields his face against the setting sun with a glittering, ring-infested hand. At the corner of his eye! 8221;, and begins to row at full speed. The man looks up fro...

Thoughts on science, society, and the media. Musings on Grad School and the Great Beyond. April 16, 2011 in Musings. Apologies to my small group of readers (small in number, NOT spirit! Although perhaps the grind is the grind no matter where or what. I do still have a insane passion for science and would probably be pretty happy with whatever I do as long as I get to think science. Thoughts on science, society, and the media. Venter’s Synthetic Genome Spurs Public Discussion of Science. May 21, 2010 in News. While it may be debated whether Craig Venter’s newly announced creation of a synthetic genome controlling a bacteria is a stupendous breakthrough or just hype. Take this thread for example in response to the BBC’s “Have Your Say: Will synthetic biology do more harm than good? One commenter brought up the Will Smith movie,. Fascinating Scientific American article on this here.

Thoughts on science, society, and the media. Richard Axel on human behavior, smell, and Woody Allen. April 27, 2011 in People. Richard Axel is a science celebrity. He is brilliant, funny, and, oh yeah, he won a Nobel Prize. And I got to sit next to him at lunch the other day! He was in town to give a talk in my department. To give us grad students a chance to brush with greatness, we are allowed to have lunch with the invited speakers (woohoo, they let us out of lab! 8211; chemicals that animals use to c...
