The Generation Y Scientist: Leveraging university resources
http://gen-y-sci.blogspot.com/2009/08/leveraging-university-resources.html
The Generation Y Scientist. Plunge from the Ivory Tower. Tuesday, August 18, 2009. So why is it that companies shy away from working with universities? Academics have access to government funding that companies are ineligible to apply for, and we're not talking small change, either. In my experience, academics apply their vast knowledge to areas that may not be particularly useful to companies, but that's not to say that academics wouldn't be interested. The Generation Y Scientist: One small step
http://gen-y-sci.blogspot.com/2009/08/one-small-step.html
The Generation Y Scientist. Plunge from the Ivory Tower. Wednesday, August 5, 2009. Like my father, I was inspired by the biotech revolution of the 1980's. The developments in the biotech arena over the past 3 decades can be directly credited with saving the lives of both of my grandmothers, my grandfather (more than once! The Generation Y Scientist: Why the science system is not sustainable
http://gen-y-sci.blogspot.com/2009/10/why-science-system-is-not-sustainable.html
The Generation Y Scientist. Plunge from the Ivory Tower. Saturday, October 3, 2009. Why the science system is not sustainable. In Peter Lawrence's now famous PLoS article, Real Lives and White Lies in the Funding of Scientific Research. I turn to the harsh reality of economics that we, as scientists, need to recognise. Transversely, such a multi-talented individual could bring a perspective into the lab that could benefit those around him/her. I'm not saying that research must. Research leads to innovati...

The Generation Y Scientist: Where have all the post docs gone?
http://gen-y-sci.blogspot.com/2009/08/where-have-all-post-docs-gone.html
The Generation Y Scientist. Plunge from the Ivory Tower. Thursday, August 20, 2009. Where have all the post docs gone? Will be employed at a research organisation 5 years after graduation. Of concern is that the PhD process is heavily weighted towards obtaining an academic position. This means that the academic training these students are receiving will not be sufficient on its own to prepare them for the workforce. So why won't these PhD students find employment in academia? Go overseas; or. By upskilli...

The Generation Y Scientist: Lack business skills? Start a business!
http://gen-y-sci.blogspot.com/2009/08/lack-business-skills-start-business.html
The Generation Y Scientist. Plunge from the Ivory Tower. Friday, September 4, 2009. OK - I have a business, now what? You'll need a website. I know nothing about websites (other than how to surf the net), but there are easy ways to set up quality websites using free hosting and site building - for example, here's a good website. That uses Google Sites. This was set up by following the guidance from here. I don't even know what i want to do! Most people would advise you to have an idea before. The vast ma...

DOWN AND OUT IN PALMY AND LONDON. Wednesday, 1 December 2010. Buenos Aires: Back Again. We took three things seriously when we returned to BA.eating and drinking and napping. In particular Palermo was totes the most epic meal of our LIVES. Go to. Estaurant if you are ever in BA. It was seven levels of steak heaven. Easter lunch with the family. Delicious steak with 12 different accompaniments - this deserves a big picture. They even did massive serving dish sized vegetarian meals for the veggie.

DOWN AND OUT IN PALMY AND LONDON. Wednesday, 23 December 2009. Pisco: It smells like fish. Smell, but a 'my god what is that fishy smell? Smell they also have a penchant for tooting their vehicles horns, all through the night. Cant quite see them in the pic above, but they are hauling up supplies on a rope (possibly birdfeed). In the afternoon we went to the Paracas National Park where we saw flamingoes. It was sort of like the moon. But the moon by the sea. Next mission, Huacachina. The ladies liked Mike.

P A N T A L O O N S: Punta del Diablo: Not Lovers Not Sisters

DOWN AND OUT IN PALMY AND LONDON. Tuesday, 12 October 2010. Punta del Diablo: Not Lovers Not Sisters. After the phsycial and pyschological traumas of St paddys day in BA, we decided to gap it outta there pretty fast. We made it to Montievideo after a few false starts. Into the most expensive place. We decided to skip the more upmarket touristy beach of Punta del este and head straight for Punta del diablo- rumoured to have a more dirty hippyish vibe. We caught up with the lovely Kate. But the hammock loo...

DOWN AND OUT IN PALMY AND LONDON. Friday, 30 October 2009. I swear its not swine flu. After lying to Mexican customs officials about the state of our health (not good) we are in Hostel Amigo in Mexico City. They not only have free breakfast but free dinner too, awesome. We have completed a tour of the Anthropology Museum, seen Frida Kahlo's house and sampled some of the finest roadside cuisine. Today we are hitting the city centre and tonight there will be a bit of Lucha Libre- just for Mike. A CUP OF JO.

DOWN AND OUT IN PALMY AND LONDON. Tuesday, 2 February 2010. La Paz- chrimbo and the final farewell (sob). A major highlight of La Paz had to be our beds, which had duvets, no piles of smelly wolly blankies for us on christmas eve, nice cushy duvets, thanks santa. I recommend the Point hostel to anyone heading to La Paz, if you like a good duvet. So christmas began in the traditonal way, with secret santa stockings (obviously not so secret when there are only 4 people). Mike was Santa Claus. After christm...
