Saturday, October 31, 2009. Awards, Awards, Everywhere. So last week, someone I know won a Directors Guild. Award I actually got a little thrill from holding the award. This week one of my colleagues was voted the best server in Toronto in a readers choice poll in a major weekly publication. It is a very impressive accomplishment, given that we are just a little bar. I have been in this business for thirty years, and I like to think that I am pretty good at what I do, but nobody ever gave me an award.

Friday, August 27, 2010. Di - Vine - ity. Tonight Torontonians felt a little chill in the air, a minute signal that change is afoot. As I closed the outdoor area for the evening, I looked up at the magnificent grapevine that envelopes our patio each year, currently at its peak. I consider the fact that I've known this vine longer than anybody who works here. This only lasts for a few weeks. Let the vine do its work, you'll thank it later. I wish I could say the same. Wednesday, December 30, 2009. Ya Gotta Start Somewhere. Initially when I started blogging, it was a meant as a way to communicate and record my trip to Ghana. I'm really glad I did that, if only for selfish reasons. When I go back and read the blog, I have a great number of those "oh yeah, I completely forgot about that" moments. After returning from Africa, I began to learn more about blogging through sites like Problogger. And a great many others. The ironic thing about posting content on the web with ...

Tuesday, September 28, 2010. Yes, you are so vain, and your Facebook posts are living proof. And same here. Shame on both of us. You're boring, your misconceptions about your own existence bore me, and the fact that you have created some delusion whereby you think what you post on Facebook is of any interest to anyone other than the fake little clique members that you cultivate is a whole 'nother level of boring. I'm all three, but I have better things to do. I'm very sorry that you don't. On any given d...

Sunday, May 31, 2009. Image by oneVillage Initiative. During my time in Ghana. I was amazed by the spirit of the people. They are engaged with each other in ways that we in urban North America are not. It seems that the common struggle through day to day difficulties has created a common sympathy for one another. Yes, people complain about the government, and how things could be better (as they do in every country), but I am talking about complaints on a personal level. The thing that I am discovering is...

Wednesday, January 20, 2010. The Art Of Flying Naked. I've done a little bit of flying this year, and I came to the following conclusion after extensively observing the culture of the average economy flyer. Why do we have this compulsion to bring all this crap with us and that it be present at all times? I spent a lot of time lugging around a bunch of crap that I didn't need on long flights. So, in the spirit of keeping the line moving, I offer the following advice. Posted by goyestoeverything.com. Outsi...

Saturday, June 27, 2009. This is a little bartering technique I figured out in Ghana. My heart is not really into fighting people over an amount of money that I can easily earn back home. By all means you should not pay the first price offered; in some countries not bartering will lead to a loss of face. However, odds are that the person that you are bartering with works very very hard for not much money. Posted by goyestoeverything.com. Links to this post. Labels: Ghana Osu Bartering NPO. Sunday, February 28, 2010. Our lives are full of moments. In which we strive to be better people, all of us at once both student and teacher to one another with roles constantly reversing. But events. Are what put the exclamation marks on our existence. This was a picture I snapped while walking through the Old Quarter of Hanoi, Vietnam. As I was walking down the street a bride exited from a nearby building, and I managed to coax my crappy, but ever faithful Kodak to capture this image. Links to this post.

Monday, May 31, 2010. This day, this second, this lifetime. I'm striving to be more like Matt, trying to learn my dance, which is pretty much what we are all doing. Where we fail is when we do not share our dance with others. I know because I do it all the time. But all around I see teachers urging me on. For both of us. Let us be grateful that we have each other. That we may dance together. It is not important that you dance well, it only matters that you dance. No matter where you are. I watch a lot of...
