The surge of coastal tourism, development projects in low-lying communities, the increased dumping of garbage and sewage into the sea, and predictions around rising sea levels and storms are all threatening our shorelines. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy in the U.S, Cylcone Aila in India and Bangladesh, and Cyclone Pam in the South Pacific, a growing number of people are coming to the realization that many coastal communities are in danger of being flooded or even underwater by the end of this century.

Elke is an elementary teacher at Beachcombers Community School on Vancouver Island. She has taught environmental education to children for almost a decade. In addition to her work in conservation she is a prolific artist. My plan is to get my students to explore an eco-system, understand how it works, and then identify some of it’s vulnerabilities to things like climate change and sea-level rise and then decide on how they can actually become part of the solution.
