The Speech Space: January 2015

http://www.thespeechspace.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

January 12, 2015. Sign of the Week: Play. It's been a while since my last post- the holidays just really got the best of me this year! I'm back today with the sign of the week, which is "play". This is a great sign to use before you transition in activities where you will be playing. To make the sign, make two fists, then extend your thumb and pinky fingers back out. Now, slightly twist both fists at the wrist at the same time. Here's a great video demo by My Smart Hands. Sign of the week.

Doyle Speech Works: ASHA Schools 2015: A Look at the Lighter Side

http://doylespeechworks.blogspot.com/2015/07/asha-schools-2015-look-at-lighter-side.html

Musings on blending speech-language pathology and life. Tuesday, July 21, 2015. ASHA Schools 2015: A Look at the Lighter Side. It's been one week and one day since my return to NH from Phoenix, AZ where I made my yearly pilgrimage to the ASHA Schools Conference. Each year during the summer school-based SLPs converge in a pre-appointed destination for an opportunity to hobnob with the speech-language pathology glitterati. It is a time to reconnect, share, and learn and this year was no exception. I met my...

Musings on blending speech-language pathology and life. Tuesday, August 11, 2015. The Frenzied SLPs: Surviving the First Week. D-Day is quickly approaching! My first few weeks are chaotic. It seems my brain completely shuts off in June and when I return to school I feel like I've never worked as an SLP before! Here is part of my week one to-do list:. Unpack and inventory materials purchased through speech budget and delivered over the summer. Determine, with my new SLPA, how to divvy up the caseload.

Musings on blending speech-language pathology and life. Sunday, January 25, 2015. The Emperor Wears Clothes. My first foray into the blogging world was in July 2014. Yes, I am a blogger newbie. What is most important about this is not how long I've blogging, but why I began blogging! My desire to share my thoughts and ideas about my life and profession came on the heels of my completion of the ASHA Leadership Development Program. I thought, "Why not? I zipped out to California on Wednesday for a two-day ...

Musings on blending speech-language pathology and life. Tuesday, June 16, 2015. This is My Relaxed Look. It's my last week of school! Typically, I am in the throes of progress reports, last minute IEPs and evaluations, end of year reflections, cleaning, sorting, and other assorted mayhem. For some peculiar reason the end of this school year is different. In fact this. School year has been different! Last summer I created organizers. That have kept me on task and on time). In fact, I was often. I was able...

Musings on blending speech-language pathology and life. Sunday, October 26, 2014. One "StressLP" Rocking the Boat. Photo credit: Lois Metzger. When I read about a veteran SLP who weeps the first week of school because she feels powerless to help her students, I ask, "Why? When I read of a young SLP who is reprimanded for having a pile of papers waiting to be sorted through, in the corner of a room, I ask, "Why? I don't pretend to have the answers, but I believe it is time to rally! Want to rock the boat?

Just when I think I have a handle on EVERYTHING, it all slips away! My friend holds this certification and agreed to add her two cents to the blog series. The Kindness Project Series: Easy Ways to Reach the Kids We Teach {Creative Speech Lab}. January 10, 2017. To me, one of the most rewarding aspects to working with children is building a relationship with the ones who need it the most. Many of us have encountered students who sorely need an extra dose of kindness. Over the next several months, some of my favorite educators and I will be sharing free ideas and resources to help weave kindness into your time with your students. When I was in Junior High, m...
