The Crop Cart helps us plant, weed,. Transplant, and harvest without breaking our backs. It is motor driven too! We enjoy using old equipment, like our 1940’s Allis Chalmer combine. It can harvest over 100 crops. History of the Farm. This is our cool looking 1940’s Allis Chalmers ‘G’ tractor. We use it to assist with planting and it is great to use for cultivating rows and rows of veggies.

Wild & Weird

http://www.thespencefarm.com/index_files/Page546.htm

Our farm has become somewhat known for its wild and weird crops. We harvest most of those wild crops from our 40 acre woodlot. We begin the harvest season mid February through March collecting sap from the sugar maples and boiling it into delicious syrup, 100% maple syrup with nothing else added. It truly is fantastic! May brings us to the morel mushroom season. We love morels! Wilds in the Woods. History of the Farm.

Heirloom Crops

Iroquois White Corn was initially grown by the Iroquois Tribe in New York state. The Iroquois Nation was supplying this corn meal to restaurants, including some that we work with in Chicago. Two years ago, Rick Bayless’s Frontera Grill restaurant in Chicago asked us if we could grow this corn as they were unable to obtain the corn meal anymore from the tribe. When we called the company in Canada to purchase another six pounds of seed, we were informed that they only had five pounds that they could sell u...

History of the Farm

http://www.thespencefarm.com/index_files/Page516.htm

Spence Farm A Brief History. In 1830, our fourth great-grandfather Valentine Darnall came to Illinois from Kentucky. He bought 160 acres from the government for $1.25 an acre. By the late 1800’s, his grandson Malachi Martin (MM) Spence was in charge of the farm business and the land. In the 1950’s maple syrup was one of the important crops for the farm. WD Spence (seen in the picture above with his family), MM’s son, tapped nearly 600 maple trees and sold syrup from the farm. History of the Farm.

Just some little snippets about farm life. Wednesday, November 23, 2011. Do you know if your farmer is raising the products you buy from them? Just some little snippets about farm life. Sunday, May 6, 2012. Rosey days and Rhubarb recipe. I'm still working with the edible flowers! It's so much fun. We've come across some really wonderful ones that we didn't know about, such as black locust blossoms. Unfortunately the trees are at the end of the bloom. We were a week too late. After searching all the trees, I found a small spray that was still somewhat fresh. WOW! Today's find isn't new.just that they are blooming now. Roses! I have to say that t...

Just some little snippets about farm life. Wednesday, May 29, 2013. Just a few pics. I've been out roaming the countryside with my Tablet trying to get some good pictures of veggie fields down here in Georgia. And, I have to say it has been extremely hard to get good pictures.because it is so darn sunny! But, even tho there are small farm graveyards full of small veggie equipment.there is also hope! And, there are lots of little farms selling eggs and produce alongside the roads. We can also go up to the...

Just the Four of Us

Just the Four of Us. Here's a peek into our world. Saturday, December 5, 2009. Kids say the darndest things. Chloe has been attending Mother's Day Out two days a week this year. The boys in her class have exposed her to the "hunting" culture that is HUGE here! She came home the other day and asked how someone's hand (pointer finger) could make a gun. Then she said, "Mommy, we can't talk about guns at school. But we can talk about them at home, right? Kiss Santa would you? I got a kick out of that one!
