Karen Jordan is a journalist and singer. A cum laude graduate of Wellesley College, Karen also has a Master's Degree from Stanford University. She is a former television reporter and producer and has worked as a reporter at The Tennessean. Her work has appeared in The Huffington Post, LA Weekly,. A daughter of Dr. Harold Jordan, she is also a great-granddaughter of Dr. John Henry Jordan and is writing a book based on his life. Follow Karen on Facebook.

Black doctors at the turn of the 20th century were a fraternity of men of whom little has been written and even less is understood. The majority of them came from impoverished backgrounds, seeking a path to economic independence and help for their race. The National Medical Association, or NMA, was formed in 1895, by Dr. Boyd and nearly a dozen of his colleagues, as a society for black doctors. That organization is still in existence today.
