the teaching b

Wednesday, April 30, 2014. A few weeks ago, my dad asked me what my biggest takeaways were from my past 2 years working at my elementary school. I've learned so much - it's really hard to put into words (& barely captured in this post) - but here's an attempt, a glimpse:. I'm a master detector of if kids truly need to use the bathroom, or are just bored. I can catch the general mood of a room because of all the faculty meetings I've attended. OR I can just sing sana, sana, colita de rana. I can't believe...

the teaching b: clean slate

http://www.theteachingb.blogspot.com/2014/03/clean-slate.html

Monday, March 10, 2014. Ms Castro, me puede llamar Sebastian en vez de Juan*? Ummclaro que sí.". At the beginning of the school year, one of my 6-year-old students decided to change his name a few months into 1st grade. I went with it, as did the rest of the class, and learning went on, normal as usual. The confusing and comical moment in which he asked me for permission to do so always replays in my head. This child made it so easy to change something so important in his life - his. B is for 'Bama.

Thursday, February 28, 2013. AKA the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness test. The countdown for STAAR tests. In just a few short weeks, my class will take STAAR exams for writing, reading and math to assess their mastery of fourth grade skills. My kiddos will need to write narrative and expository essays, read various passages and answer questions to assess comprehension, and solve intense 2-step math problems. Their brains are really put to the test at this point in the year.as is mine!

Sunday, April 21, 2013. Goodbye, standardized testing! The final two STAAR. Tests are this Tuesday (Math) and Wednesday (Reading). These past few weeks have included monotnous reteaches of various skills the class has not yet mastered - such as making inferences, equivalent fractions, etc. In order to spice up my reading lessons, I've encompassed some STAAR games that my kids do together:. 8211; Trashket Ball. 8211; Connect Four. 8211; Super Sleuth. Create large posters/charts divided into 9-12 squares&#...

Wednesday, March 27, 2013. I went to a fantastic training session called the Productive Struggle. Last weekend, where we discussed how students should be the creators of their own education. They must struggle productively. You see, I have mom syndrome - I'm afraid to let my babies go, let them walk, fall down a few times, and then fly away. My students are older and wiser presently than they were 212 days ago, and yet I am afraid to give them too. Are the ones that need to learn. When I build on their i...

I’m a West Coast born, Southwestern raised, Midwestern educated lady. I teach first grade full-time and over-time. When I finally get a moment to myself, I set course and plan my life. What does that look like? Well, right now my priorities are as follows:. 1 Pay off credit card debt. 2 Be physically fit (as cheaply as possible). 3 Save, save, and save. I know, I know, it doesn’t look like much fun now does it? I'm Christian, a 20-something making memories in food, art, and books. I Looked Over Jordan.
