The Travelling Gardener

Thursday, 6 August 2015. New beds to play with. In spite of my usual delayed planting this summer I am harvesting veg from the garden. Not a lot but enough. The lettuce, pak choi and arugala are great additions to the table and shortly there will be the peas and beans. The big change this summer is I finally put in a permanent back fence on the vege garden. Every year it has been expanding by about the size of the compost bins as I moved them further back each year. Finally this year I said enough. The f...

The Travelling Gardener: August 2015

http://www.thetravellinggardener.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Saturday, 22 August 2015. Old seeds and green manure. I finally got around to sorting through my seeds. I have collected lots over the years and I had way too many to fit in the seed box. So any seeds over 5 yrs old got turfed. I emptied the seeds from their package into a container, then to see what would happen, sprinkled them thickly over some unused garden beds. It was great to see the old seeds still so full of life. Also a great way to recycle them through the garden. Thursday, 6 August 2015.

The Travelling Gardener: Sointula, B.C

http://www.thetravellinggardener.blogspot.com/2015/06/sointula-bc.html

Tuesday, 9 June 2015. Sointula, B.C. It is pretty exciting to finally arrive in Sointula (Finnish meaning peace and harmony), Malcolm Island, Brtitish Columbia. Home of my next garden. It's going to be a while before I get started. In a few weeks we head back to Ontario for the summer. But there is no reason why I can't dream right? Above is a nice sunny spot where I'll be starting it all. There are many deer around, so one of the first jobs will be to erect some tall fences.

The Travelling Gardener: March 2015

http://www.thetravellinggardener.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 24 March 2015. We have mountains of chillies. The chillies we grow here seem to be reliably perennial. We have had these plants on the go now for 3 yrs. This year they produced a huge crop. We have enough dried chilli so it was time to try something new. After assessing what ingredients we had available we decided to make a batch of sambal or chilli sauce. Our chilli plants are huge-almost 8 ft tall and loaded with fruit. Also I am thinking that a tsp in cream cheese may make a delicious dip.

The Travelling Gardener: May 2015

http://www.thetravellinggardener.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, 31 May 2015. We have arrived in British Columbia. The sun is shining and spring is under way. In a few days we head up to Malcolm Island and see the property we have just bought. The container of our stuff will be following us. All very exciting. OK this colourful lizard isn't from BC. He was visiting my garden in Thailand the day we left. We hooked up with our camper in Victoria. It wintered over with our friends Scott and Andy. I did like the raised beds on the dock filled with veges. We arrive...
