The Traveling Penguin

Searching the world for anything and everything. ;-). Long time, no travel writing. Shame on me for not posting about my past travels. I have had quite a few actually, so I'll try to write something or other about these in the near future. Baggage theft at airports is a big problem. And the claim is that homeless people. Are responsible for most of the thefts. I call bullshit. What kind of airport allows just anyone to go into the baggage claim area these days anyway? Uh, no ****, Sherlock. Urk said I wo...

The Traveling Penguin: October 2007

http://thetravellingpenguin.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Searching the world for anything and everything. ;-). Filling in the blanks. LESOTHO! I'm finding that I quite enjoy getting up at the crack of dawn, to enjoy the sunrise, the morning air, the birds, the scenery in the morning light. I really feel at peace. We started the day by getting up early to take photos of birds and the mountains. After breakfast and after leaving our laundry with the San Lodge staff (they do laundry (wash, line dry, and fold) for you for 35 Rand - wheee! The road is so primitive ...

The Traveling Penguin: in vino veritas...

http://thetravellingpenguin.blogspot.com/2007/11/in-vino-veritas.html

Searching the world for anything and everything. ;-). It's the truth. South African wine is fantastic! This was a happy day for everyone, especially Mini Wolfgang! It was the big wine tasting day! We never expected that we would see this kind of a kill. Lions killing buffalo, sure, if we were lucky. But a dog killing a dove? Very freaky. It was kind of grotesque, but at the same time, overwhelmingly funny. Darn, I could use some wine now ;-). Difference, but the wines here are beyond fantastic. They're s...

Searching the world for anything and everything. ;-). All aboard the posh purple train of Ring of Fat doom! 02/10 – 03/10/2007. We got up quite early to get a taxi to the train station, arriving at the Premier Classe. Lounge a bit too early, so we had to wait outside, but that didn't really matter. while it seemed kind of dodgy in the area, we never really felt unsafe. And we didn't have to wait that long. Quite shortly after boarding, we were herded into the dining area, where we were given a glass of s...

The Traveling Penguin: August 2007

http://thetravellingpenguin.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

Searching the world for anything and everything. ;-). We are trying to figure out what route to take for the Drakensberg and perhaps some of the battlefields in KwaZulu-Natal. Some alternatives are as shown on the map (you can click on it to make it bigger):. We start from Harrismith, and the purple indicates our main route. We'd like to make a stop in Royal Natal National Park; the orange indicates a possible side trip. So, to those in the know, how would you do this trip? That is, which alternatives?

http://itchywebbedfeet.blogspot.com/2009/10/2009-10-102009-10-11-there-and-back.html

Waddling the world for that perfect scratch! 2009-10-10/2009-10-11 - there and back again. After the wine tastings, we went back to the apartment to collect our stuff and say goodbye to our hosts. The water had returned and we got the offer to shower in their house, but we decided it would be best to get to the airport early and just shower there. So we went to the lounge right away, and got into the shower. Aaaah, precious shower! Yeah, that's right. So we had to do a lot of sprinting. Fortunate...Our l...

http://itchywebbedfeet.blogspot.com/2009/10/2009-10-05-close-encounters-of-penguiny.html

Waddling the world for that perfect scratch! 2009-10-05 - Close Encounters of the Penguiny Kind. We had been looking at the weather forecast for the week, and it looked kind of dismal (forecasted rain) for Wednesday and Thursday. So we decided we had better go to Simonstown to see the penguins while the weather was still good. Droewoers, and tortilla chips to snack on, and drove back to Stellenbosch. Itchy webbed feet...: 2009-10-09 - the last full day

http://itchywebbedfeet.blogspot.com/2009/10/2009-10-09-last-full-day.html

Waddling the world for that perfect scratch! 2009-10-09 - the last full day. This blog entry is what happens when we don't write the darn thing right away, and instead write it several weeks later, when we've forgotten everything! When we were done, we drove to Signal Hill. Oh, and while we were up there, we heard the Noon Gun. And one other place (don't remember what), but they were both closed. hmmf. We eventually found a farm called Somerbosch. After lunch, we did a wine tasting at Kleine Zalze. Aka M...

http://itchywebbedfeet.blogspot.com/2009/10/2009-03-10-wine-is-best-when-shared.html

Waddling the world for that perfect scratch! 2009-10-03 - wine is best when shared with friends. Our first destination was Alto. They had some really nice reds. Our tasting companions bought a bottle here. Next up was Bilton, just a few hundred meters down the road. This is a small winery with a range of some really impressing red wines. We ended up buying two yummy wines there - the Bilton Shiraz 2005 and the Bilton Sir Percy Classic Blend 2005. The restaurant was full, so we had to wait for a table&#46...

http://itchywebbedfeet.blogspot.com/2009/10/2009-10-06-waddling-from-winery-to.html

Waddling the world for that perfect scratch! 2009-10-06 - waddling from winery to winery. The weather was cool and drizzly; not a bad day for a walk. However, the farmers were very stressed. Farm workers were frantically spraying the vines with an anti-fungal substance (sulphur with an organic resin as binding agent). We also saw a bunch of Sauvignon blanc vines where the leaves had been attacked by disease - a disaster for the crop. Anli knew this beforehand so she somehow or other arranged for this lit...

Waddling the world for that perfect scratch! 2009-09-28 – spit or swallow? I forgot to add the disclaimer for the past few posts. Photos will come later, and some content may be edited. We're also doing a mass posting now, since we've been without the InterTubes since leaving Wild Spirit Lodge (we're in Stellenbosch now). http://itchywebbedfeet.blogspot.com/2009/10/2009-10-08-penguins-need-cuddles-too.html

Waddling the world for that perfect scratch! 2009-10-08 - penguins need cuddles too! When Ms. Penguin read her e-mail this morning, she got a mail from SANCCOB asking if it were possible to do the scheduled tour today instead of Friday. We had no plans for the day other than being lazy around Stellenbosch, so we arranged for a time for the tour, and headed out to Table View, where SANCCOB is located. Pengu‌ins are surprisingly soft, except for the wings, which are hard and bristly. The feathers...Rocky i...

Waddling the world for that perfect scratch! 2009-10-03 - the fountain of Ms. Penguin. And no, it's not the fountain of youth kind of thing. Ms Penguin is really starting to hate fancy schmancy places. When she goes bush camping, where there are no modern facilities and questionable hygienic conditions at times, she stays perfectly healthy. When she goes to fancy places, well. She was feeling quite bad about not being very social. Not a good combination at all. Ugh ugh ugh. Lagt inn av Cynthia and Alvin.

Waddling the world for that perfect scratch! 2009-10-01 – Mini Bobble almost subject to cannibalism. Mini Bobble is still a bit traumatized from the incident. Oh, and we ended up not having lunch at Spier. The restaurant was only doing a buffet and we weren't hungry enough for it. The deli was too busy. So we ended up going to Hudson's at Vredenheim Wine Estate, for a Cape Malay curry. Yum. We have been to this place before; they have a very lovely picnic garden. The Travelling Parsi by Kamal F Sunavala

Educating the reader that Parsis do exist beyond Freddie Mercury and Zubin Mehta (yes, yes, sighs and swoons all around) The Travelling Parsi speaks of colliding worlds, delicious food and the hubris of 102 year-old dowager aunts with scandalous love lives. The Unbelievable Parsiness of Things (with apologies to Milan Kundera) comes from being born a Parsi, knowing Parsis and passing on the Parsiness.
