We use this metaphor in our book and presentations to share our experiences with lupus and scleroderma and encourage others to re-examine how they live with chronic illness. The theme of our work is, If you have to wear an ugly dress, learn to accessorize. Accessories are attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors embedded in our life management strategies that allow us to live healthy, happy lives in spite of illness.
