the untidy farm

Glorious chaos, Messy diversity. Friday, January 21, 2011. Sunday, May 2, 2010. I attended a permaculture workshop at TS Designs. In Burlington yesterday, and the subject of untidiness was raised. I was not aware of it, precisely, when I named this blog, but apparently Bill Mollison, one of the founders of today's permaculture system (much of it is ancient wisdom, really), had problems with tidiness, too. A couple of quotes:. Untidiness is a natural state, tidiness is maintained disorder". In Chapel Hill...

the untidy farm: January 2010

http://theuntidyfarm.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Glorious chaos, Messy diversity. Monday, January 25, 2010. The Persistence of Chickens. But, beyond examining their more obvious production qualities, I have to recall their personal stories, how they got here, who they are. Obviously, this can sometimes make it harder to "get rid" of them. I was thinking of the story of the "Potatoes" recently, and their mama-. In a moment that I sincerely hope will be included when they make a movie of my life, I threw open the upstairs window, and yelled: "STEVE!

Glorious chaos, Messy diversity. Monday, July 27, 2009. Um, I should really be doing chores right now, but if there are two things I really love, they are nature and photography. I just encountered the most perfect luna moth I think I have ever seen, and had to share her-. I took these with my blackberry, so they are not very good quality, oh well. You get the idea. And here is Mantis, master of disguise! Saturday, July 25, 2009. I understand that accidents or mistakes can happen, but if, say, a crate of...

Glorious chaos, Messy diversity. Saturday, August 22, 2009. You Spin Me Right Round. As you may know from reading the great wool fiasco. I have a great store of lovely rovings to be spun into yarn. So, I obtained a spinning wheel a few weeks ago, and now I have a new obsession. I hated trying to spin with a drop spindle, but where it was clumsy, tedious, and mind numbingly slow, the little wheel is efficient, easy, and fun! I had heard of dying natural fibers with koolaid, so I did a little research....

I have become a bit poultry-centric these days, I am afraid, identify pretty strongly with Homer Simpson, mmmm-beer, will always be a knitter, prefer to be outdoors whenever possible, I dig happiness, good food, people who think for themselves, clean air, long walks on the beach, and dirt.

Big Woods Cabin: October 2008

http://bigwoodscabin.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 16, 2008. We had a great time on our trip to Virginia! Keely and Curt put up with all of us- and all our dogs- for a long, fun, work and play weekend. Aunt Jeanne, don't know if you read this, but DISREGARD THE NEXT PARAGRAPH AND DON'T LOOK AT THE PICTURES! After hours of hauling out dirty what-nots and dusty odd-bits, we were all pretty grimy and greasy. So we all loaded up and took a dip in the beautiful Cowpasture River (not being sarcastic, it's the cleanest river in Virginia! I'll ...

Big Woods Cabin: May 2009

http://bigwoodscabin.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 26, 2009. Well, I guess this is what I get for putting off all the laundry that I should've done over the weekend. it's been raining steadily for about 2 hours now, and it looks like it's settling in for the day. I just hate running the dryer! True, it makes the clothes softer, and gets more cat and dogs hair off them, but still. I honestly enjoy hanging clothes on the line, and I find it much more convenient to fold them as they come off the line than when they come out of the dryer. We dec...

Big Woods Cabin: September 2008

http://bigwoodscabin.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 12, 2008. Well, the friendly folks down at Pittsboro Feed and Garden decided to order baby chicks for the fall, and, well. These are so freshly hatched, most of them still have their egg teeth, that little bump on the end of the beak that they use to break out of their shells. Left over from the dinosaur days. The egg tooth falls off a day or two after hatching, so obviously these babies are fresh! These are some of a large crop growing in the dog pen by the doghouses. And here's some p...

Verdant Furrows: March 2009

http://verdantfurrows.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 18, 2009. It was a perfect day; I dread the summer. Today was beautiful and perfect and I had to come inside because it was too nice and I was afraid of getting high on it. The fog rolled out by midday today after nearly a week of clouds and precipitation. The plants and animals all seemed eager for a more efficient photosynthesis/vitamin D synthesis. The cover crop is lush. Meanwhile, our slightly less hardy crops are starting to fill the field or emerge. And in the hoop house.

Big Woods Cabin: August 2009

http://bigwoodscabin.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 6, 2009. We've been really into the idea of Yurts lately. Not only because of a recent fascination with Mongolia ( Cave of the Yellow Dog. Well, partly because of that. But for other reasons, too. A huge difference between these round buildings and a yurt is portability- unlike Shakers, Mongolians are an historically nomadic people, so yurts are traditionally a very portable structure. There are a few manufacturers of yurts in the US ( Yurt. Is actually a Russian word, Ger. They supposed...

Big Woods Cabin: January 2009

Sunday, January 18, 2009. It's been awhile. I've been away from the blogworld for a month or two now. usually Buck wakes up from his nap as soon as I sit down to type, so we'll see how this post goes. Things are happening around here, though, and I don't have pictures of all of it, so here is a brief summary of the last month or so:. Buck is now crawling and eating! He is into everything, like a good baby should be! He has the bumps on his head to prove it. Mendy (as we have named her) seems to be doing ...

Tuesday, August 26, 2008. The best way to calm a chicken is to make sure you've got their wings comfortably pinned against them, hold them close to your body so they feel secure, speak gentle, soothing tones, and I've found that stroking their beak will almost always work. So today was the first treatment. Phoenix did great. After his initial freak-out, he remained calm throughout the ordeal, excepting a few loud bi-cawk. Sunday, August 24, 2008. Big Woods Cabin: Cat of the Week-- Trusty

http://bigwoodscabin.blogspot.com/2009/07/cat-of-week-trusty.html

Friday, July 17, 2009. Cat of the Week- Trusty. This is Trusty. He is four and a half years old, male neutered domestic shorthair silver (or just plain ol' grey) tabby. We got him (for free) as a six-week-old kitten, and as we drove away from his birth family on that stormy June eve, he never looked back. He sat quietly in my lap looking around with interest and not a speck of fear or hesitancy, and then he fell asleep. Also, he tends to give dirty looks. It's not so much that he's a bad sport, but he's ...

Cookings, eatings, wanderings and ponderings. Wednesday, 15 August 2012. The curry rides again. Last nights supper was a jolly rejuvenation of the previous days curry.  Having enough for two people and three mouths to feed required some creative thinking. It was fine, rather than splendid, and an adequate conversion of leftovers into supper.  Nobody complained and it all got eaten, which is always the test isnt it? Posted at 06:49 PM.
