The View from Steve's camera

The View from Steve's camera. Saturday, May 9, 2015. Irene Hochheimer's Spring Flowers. My grandmother Irene Wormser Hochheimer was born 112 years ago on May 1. She died in 1994, but every spring we have the joy of seeing the blooming plants she gave us from her garden. The purple flowers above are a hardy primrose that she said a friend of hers collected from Siberia. And the best things about it are how early in the year it blooms (a couple weeks before forsythia) and its sweet perfume smell. I would m...

The View from Steve's camera: May 2014

http://www.theviewfromstevescamera.org/2014_05_01_archive.html

The View from Steve's camera. Saturday, May 31, 2014. A couple weeks ago we saw pink ladyslipper orchids in Connecticut. This week they're in bloom in New Hampshire! Along with lots of other flowers of the woods and field. I don't think ferns really have a "flower" but the brown parts are, I believe, trying to do something reproductive. The green moss on the path made me think of Bilbo Baggins. "The Road Goes Ever On," etc. And the wild strawberries. There was a lot of water from the recent rains. From t...

The View from Steve's camera. Friday, December 26, 2014. The Purpose of Thanksgiving. You're saying, "What? Either because, hey, it's Christmas and here's this Jewish guy posting Thanksgiving photos. Or you're thinking, "Isn't the purpose of Thanksgiving, like, duh? OK, fair enough. But here's my train of thought:. Similarly, Thanksgiving. Really? You live the blessed life you have and you're going to be thankful once a year? Apparently others like to eat them too. Third, all these great people show up (...

The View from Steve's camera: Galapagos

http://www.theviewfromstevescamera.org/2014/08/galapagos.html

The View from Steve's camera. Sunday, August 3, 2014. In June, we had the opportunity to go to the Galapagos Islands, with all of Amy's family. We had been there 27 years before, and this trip was just as amazing. The scenery is gorgeous, and many animals fearlessly allow you to approach quite close, because they have no natural predators. Human interaction is closely supervised and regulated so that it also is not threatening. There were sea lions on landings, on beaches,. And in the water.

The View from Steve's camera. Sunday, April 7, 2013. We have discovered glass-blowing. OK, we knew it existed; I think we watched a demonstration years ago. But now we have had our hands on the blow-pipe, we have tried to control and form hot glass, and wow! But glass won't move unless it's melting. When it starts to cool just a little, it may be hot enough to burn you, but it's not soft enough to move. So back in the blast oven it goes to heat up. And when is it hot enough to work again? We have learned...

The View From Sunnymountain Street

The View From Sunnymountain Street. IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE? The author at work? Wednesday, 8 September 2010. First off, just want to say congrats to Captain America and his official photographer J who have just taken delivery of a beautiful baby daughter. Well done, good work. Kiwi fruits would be my guess. Once at my place of work I was chatting with a Swiss colleague just back from vacation. "How was your holiday? What the hell has that got to do with football" I replied. She is also blanking m...

Who knew they still had it in them? Posted by Jim Menick. Friday, December 21, 2012. Lo an Behold: Academy Debate. Listen to Episode 61.
