Marking essays and poisoning dogs | The Wing to Heaven

https://thewingtoheaven.wordpress.com/2015/06/28/marking-essays-and-poisoning-dogs

The Wing to Heaven. Marking essays and poisoning dogs. June 28, 2015. The Wing to Heaven. Asked participants to judge the following actions. 1) Stealing a towel from a hotel. 2) Keeping a dime you find on the ground. 3) Poisoning a barking dog. They had to give each action a mark out of 10 depending on how immoral the action was, on a scale where 1 is not particularly bad or wrong and 10 is extremely evil. A second group were asked to do the same, but they were given the following three actions to judge.

The Wing to Heaven. Comparative judgment: 21st century assessment. November 15, 2015. The Wing to Heaven. In my previous posts I have looked at some of the flaws in traditional teacher assessment. And assessments of character. This post is much more positive: it’s about an assessment innovation that really works. Genuinely brilliant and original responses to the task fail because they don’t meet the rubric, while responses that have been heavily coached. Still, even a supporter of MCQs like me. I have do...

What do exams and opinion polls have in common? | The Wing to Heaven

https://thewingtoheaven.wordpress.com/2015/05/17/what-do-exams-and-opinion-polls-have-in-common

The Wing to Heaven. What do exams and opinion polls have in common? May 17, 2015. The Wing to Heaven. Daniel Koretz, Professor of Education at Harvard University, uses polls as an analogy to explain to people how exams actually work. Opinion polls sample the views of a small number of people in order to try and work out the views of a much larger population. Exams are analogous, in that they feature a small sample of questions from a much wider ‘domain’ of knowledge and skill. In. Here is Koretz again:.

Assessment alternatives 2: using pupil work instead of criteria | The Wing to Heaven

https://thewingtoheaven.wordpress.com/2015/06/13/assessment-alternatives-2-using-pupil-work-instead-of-criteria

The Wing to Heaven. Assessment alternatives 2: using pupil work instead of criteria. June 13, 2015. The Wing to Heaven. In my last few blog posts, I’ve looked at the problems with performance descriptors. Such as national curriculum levels. I’ve suggested two alternatives: defining these performance descriptors in terms of 1) questions and 2) example work. I discussed the use of questions here. And in this post I’ll discuss the use of pupil work. Which is bigger: 1/7 or 5/7? Band 4 assured, developed.

Assessment alternatives 1: using questions instead of criteria | The Wing to Heaven

The Wing to Heaven. Assessment alternatives 1: using questions instead of criteria. June 7, 2015. The Wing to Heaven. In many blog posts over the last couple of years, I’ve talked about the problems with prose descriptors such as national curriculum levels and grade descriptors. It’s often said that national curriculum levels and the like give us a shared language: actually, as I argue here. They create the illusion of a shared language. I’ve also suggested. Defining criteria through questions. In this c...

ManYana Ltd, Achieving Tomorrow, Today. Education, training and consultancy. http:/ www.manyanaeducation.co.uk. Sunday, 27 July 2014. An additional level in SOLO taxonomy. Solo has, via a great deal of research into students' thinking identified itself as having the following level. It seems to me that to do that one has to have some deep understanding of the underlying structure of the now related knowledge. What are the features that the related knowledge is connected by? The cat sat on the mat. I woul...

Having been persuaded of the limitations of Bloom’s Taxonomy and introduced to the benefits of SOLO through an OTP course, I decided the only way to really find out was to experiment with it myself. Lesson one involved introducing the class to SOLO. I relied upon YouTube and its explanation of SOLO through L...

ManYana Ltd: Can I improve my students' memory?

ManYana Ltd, Achieving Tomorrow, Today. Education, training and consultancy. http:/ www.manyanaeducation.co.uk. Wednesday, 5 November 2014. Can I improve my students' memory? Treading of dangerous waters, here. But the following is a distillation of what I have read and hopefully understood about memory. At some point your children will take exams and the more they can remember, facts and processes - know what and know hoy - the better they are likely to do in the exam, other things being equal. So the f...

ManYana Ltd, Achieving Tomorrow, Today. Education, training and consultancy. http:/ www.manyanaeducation.co.uk. Monday, 27 April 2015. Why do I need a teacher? I was thinking about what it was that a teacher did. A bit like the ‘If we have Google, why do we need a teacher? But what actually matters in tree identification? Wisdom rediscovered for the twenty-first century. The Dangers of the Superteacher Model. August 12, 2015. There is a certain type of book in which superteachers are held before our eyes as the example to follow. They work all hours, organise wonderful trips, create their own resources, produce professional quality theatre and musical extravaganzas . . . There is a moral imperative for those with families to achieve some kind of reasonable trade-off. Equally, individual teachers creating their own wonderf...

Wisdom rediscovered for the twenty-first century. We Need Good Schools to Help Us Become Good Teachers. April 15, 2015. Noah: he had the right idea, but I don’t think he built that thing single-handed. One of the themes of the whole Teach Like a Champion. Only a few, very exceptional individuals will have the strength of character and intellectual independence to plough their own furrow in an environment that is hostile to learning, because it is so deeply infected with bad ideas. Teach Like a Champion.

Robert Orme on education. Should Humanism be studied in GCSE RS? In response to the Department for Education’s recently proposed GCSE religious education criteria, Maxine Beech, an RE teacher, claimed that many students find it hard to engage with religious studies. Because they are unable to relate to the content. Ms Beech argues that humanism is an answer to this, saying: “[pupils] have the right to study a way of life that reflects their own.”.
