A Disturbing Coincidence: July 2005
http://disturbedjoe.blogspot.com/2005_07_01_archive.html
Friday, July 22, 2005. So Much for Baby Steps. From the New York Times. The House voted Thursday to extend permanently virtually all the major antiterrorism provisions of the USA Patriot Act after beating back efforts by Democrats and some Republicans to impose new restrictions on the government's power to eavesdrop, conduct secret searches and demand library records.". Are we to assume, then, that the War on Terrorism (tm) is to become a permanent state of affairs? A] competing bill passed last month by...

A Disturbing Coincidence: August 2005

Monday, August 29, 2005. A Libertarian Manifesto- part two. Thanks to everyone for part one's great responses! I was having some trouble distinguishing between libertarians and conservatives, so I asked JB if he could clarify a few things:. The simple answer is that they have no intentions of making smaller government. They are in the majority in the legislative branch and hold the executive branch, and the government is growing all the time. So, are they lying, or is it the reality of government...In th...

A Disturbing Coincidence: April 2005
http://disturbedjoe.blogspot.com/2005_04_01_archive.html
Saturday, April 30, 2005. The Virtues of Complexity. I recently discovered Gothamimage. A fun blog whose author claims that Bush is much more intelligent than he seems, and that the "Good ol' Boy" image is carefully contrived to pull one over on the American people. Now, I'm not certain, and we'll probably never know, but it does seem plausible. And it would fit nicely with a concern that I have regarding Bush and his group of neocons. Consider the ease with which the Patriot Act was passed. Although...

A Disturbing Coincidence: May 2005
http://disturbedjoe.blogspot.com/2005_05_01_archive.html
Friday, May 27, 2005. A judge in Indiana has ruled that a divorced couple, both of them Wiccans, cannot teach their beliefs to their child. Despite both parents' protests, the judge attached a provision to their divorce decree that they could not expose the child to "non-mainstream religious beliefs and rituals." The order does not explain which religions are mainstream. I've been trying to find out more about this ruling. Simply put, there isn't. Posted by j at 2:15 PM. Tuesday, May 24, 2005. After he m...

A Disturbing Coincidence: June 2005
http://disturbedjoe.blogspot.com/2005_06_01_archive.html
Friday, June 17, 2005. Pastor Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, who were previously known for protesting at the funerals of AIDS victims, is now protesting at the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. Apparently, God is killing these soldiers because someone bombed Phelps' church six years ago. Or, God is punishing America for its rampant immorality. Either way, here's a fantastic example of everything Christianity doesn't. Posted by j at 10:31 AM. That's worth a look. When, on televi...

Thoughts of an American Centrist: 08/01/2005 - 09/01/2005

Thoughts of an American Centrist. Friday, August 26, 2005. Indoctrination and the True Culture of Life. Let's compare two quotes. First, from the much touted and celebrated antisheehan Tammy Pruette, mother of 5 sons who served in Iraq, as quoted. For something that you believe in.' America lives in freedom because of families like the Pruetts. (Applause.)". Now let's compare it to the thoughts of a 20th Century Military Genius, General George S. Patton. Attributed to General George Patton Jr. Hey Moms, ...

Thoughts of an American Centrist: Centrist Paradise? We need Organization First.
http://americancentrist.blogspot.com/2005/05/centrist-paradise-we-need-organization.html
Thoughts of an American Centrist. Wednesday, May 25, 2005. We need Organization First. Due to the recently forged anti-filibuster compromise, there have been a number of bloggers and pundits proclaiming an end to the dominance of extremists over the agenda of Congress. Not so fast, guys. Has a great roundup of gleeful moderates, and his own words of wisdom. I agree with that cautionary note. What we needed are Moderate interest groups. Approval of homosexuality in high school curricula? And, we need mode...

Thoughts of an American Centrist: What is Profiling?
http://americancentrist.blogspot.com/2005/08/what-is-profiling.html
Thoughts of an American Centrist. Wednesday, August 10, 2005. Cross posted at " The Yellow Line. To begin an embroiled debate centered around the tension between law enforcement, anti-terrorism, and civil liberties, one need only mention the word "profiling." Of course, it's not profiling per se which gets people so uppity, but rather what they assume. Webster's lists one definition. Of the word "profile" as:. A set of data often in graphic form portraying the significant features of something . We must ...
