Book Post for October. Asymp; 4 Comments. The premise of this book (modern retelling of Dante’s Inferno starring a science fiction writer who spends the first half convinced he’s been put in a theme park made by Sufficiently Advanced Aliens) is cute. Unfortunately, it doesn’t live up to its excellent premise. Absolutely no relationship to the culture war whatsoever. Also there was a very unfair Take That to Kurt Vonnegut. Time Will Run Back. 8220;What is he calling it? 8221; is wonderful), markets are re...

Book Post for July. Asymp; 3 Comments. Thanks to Nick and Taymon Beal for giving me books.]. The Most Good You Can Do. Now piercing is antifeminist! For purposes other than hatereading, Jeffreys is at her best when she’s digging up dirt about sex-positive and liberal feminism; I particularly appreciated Anticlimax’s history of sex-positive rape and pedophilia apologia. However, Unpacking Queer Politics contains no such fascinating revelations. Larr; Previous post. Next post →. August 7, 2015 at 7:17 pm.

Come Out Come Out Wherever You Are. Asymp; 51 Comments. Content note: brief mention of suicide.]. Being nonbinary has one hell of a negative externality. Is this a huge cost for most native speakers of English who don’t have a language disability? No But when you’re me, and looking at sixty years of causing other peoplt to go “she, uh, I mean, they”… well, it adds up. The best estimates suggest about 0.3% of the population is trans. We’re never going to get there to be as many nonbinary people as t...

Asymp; 64 Comments. Alicorn has recently written Have Mercy. An essay about eugenics, and I have certain confused thoughts about it. I suppose it’s good to be upfront about such things: my true rejection of eugenics is that eugenics of certain traits I possess make me very very sad. I would like people to continue to have the genetic difference that leads to borderline personality disorder. This is not. Assuming that the gender system continues to exist, I would prefer that trans people continue to exist.
Why I Don’t Read The News Anymore | Thing of Things
https://thingofthings.wordpress.com/2015/05/06/why-i-dont-read-the-news-anymore
Why I Don’t Read The News Anymore. Asymp; 38 Comments. Recently, I stopped reading the news. I guess that’s not strictly true. Tumblr and conversations with friends occasionally tell me about news events of interest to my social group (apparently California is having a very bad drought? And I think this is an excellent life choice which I wish to recommend to everyone. If you ask people why they read political news, a lot of times they say “because I want to be an educated and informed citizen! Think abo...

Science's Less Accurate Grandmother. Creator Index, A-J. This page lists reviews (or essays) organized by the creators who wrote the books concerned. It also lists the authors of short stories in anthologies, but only if they are specifically mentioned within the review itself. (There are also tags, but this is maybe more navigable. It's also more complete when it comes to books with a lot of contributors, since Blogger limits your tags.). Remembrance of the Daleks. Gone Fishing", Time Signature. Showcas...

Warning for moral arguments, torture mention, death mention, murder mention, violence mention, and mention of Osama bin Laden and associated actions, suicide mention, bullying mention]. Recently the question arose as to how to achieve justice- how to prevent and respond to acts of evil. I thought for a while, and I seem to have come up with this.

https://thereconstructionistblog.wordpress.com/2016/11/09/fear
A meta-contrarian look at gender and sj. November 9, 2016. November 17, 2016. By silver and ivory. Trump has been elected president. This is a fact. But it doesn’t mean. That a significant portion of America hates Mexicans. It doesn’t mean that a significant portion of America hates women. And it certainly doesn’t mean that racism and xenophobia and sexism have triumphed. It means – and it already has meant. I am legitimately happy for you all. And I would like for you to be graceful in victory. The Foun...

A meta-contrarian look at gender and sj. November 17, 2016. January 5, 2017. By silver and ivory. Scrupulosity, Objectification, and Trans Obsession, Part 1: In Defense of Chasers. A followup to the girlfags post. Before I came out to myself as trans, I was absolutely obsessed with trans people. I spent all of my free time reading Julia Serano. And Not Another Aedan. And Quora’s Transgender topic and Jack Molay’s Crossdreamers. Site I followed trans accounts on Instagram. I read Ozy’s blog. Of course, I ...

Science's Less Accurate Grandmother: Bernice Summerfield Timeline

Science's Less Accurate Grandmother. Yes, it's kinda complicated at times. You try weaving through all. The media. A lot of this is borrowed from the 3rd edition of Lance Parkin and Lars Pearson's Ahistory. But they omit the anthologies, which I find a bit suspect, personally, as it renders some aspects of Benny's ongoing adventures incoherent. Simon Guerrier's Bernice Summerfield: The Inside Story. And many contributions to this thread. On Gallifrey Base [note: link is members-only] were also useful.

Skeptic's Play: The Trial of God
http://skepticsplay.blogspot.com/2008/03/trial-of-god.html
Tuesday, March 18, 2008. The Trial of God. I was reading who-knows-what when I came across a provocative reference to a play and novel called The Trial of God. By Elie Wiesel. It's hard to find a good summary of the story online, but here's one. The story is based on one of Wiesel's real experiences during the Holocaust. He witnessed three Jews indicting God for all their suffering and giving him a trial. After several days, the verdict came: guilty. Afterwards, they prayed. But I guess he got us there- ...

Human behavior, science, rationality. Laquo; Of mice and parking tickets. How good stories ruin our brains: Emily Rosa case study. May 24, 2015 by neq1. Until today I hadn’t heard of the story of Emily Rosa. Quoting wikipedia: “At age nine Rosa conceived and executed a scientific study of therapeutic touch which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. My first thoughts were: “That’s really cool. I love it that she did an experiment and got it published! Despite the repeated meas...

Johnny Miller's blog on Cassandra, distributed systems, java and other things. Friday, 27 December 2013. Rolling your own Bitmap Index in Cassandra with CQL. This blog is about a specific modeling technique that can be used to support efficient indexing of your data in Cassandra so that you can run pretty dynamic queries against it - in particular rolling your own Bitmap Index with CQL. This type of index is quite similar to a Composite Key Index. This approach has previously been described. For example,...

Don’t Use Diagnoses As Insults. Asymp; 20 Comments. I take a very firm line on insults. I think that insults are a form of social punishment, and therefore you should only insult people if the trait is (a) actually harmful and (b) something that might change in response to punishment. Maybe having dyscalculia can’t be fixed by insulting people. The problem here is not ableist language. The problem here is ableist beliefs and values. Let’s consider the joke “The Republican Party is very divers...Suggest T...

Thanksgiving Thank You Cards Free Digital Download Gratitude Verses. Wednesday, November 09, 2016. On the eve after elections social media became a really gloomy place to be. So I thought I would create some quick cards that can be printed out to say. gee Thanks,. Thanks be to...

Emily tries but misunderstands
Emily tries but misunderstands. Lose your mind and play. Lessons learned: Camden is an overrated hellhole; Soho is heaven on Earth. Up to the rigs, down to the jigs, up to the rigs of London town! Karma hates me, Aunt Irma's obviously on the way and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong! Emily is an epic idiot, but fortunately, earlier instances of epic idiocy have saved her. I've posted, what, three times today? Happiness, for once. 1839 was a weird, weird time. also, Joan is a legend. Viewing 0 - 10.
