Making medicines child sized. March 12, 2015. I have been invited to give a TED talk at the University of Birmingham on 21st March. This is both thrilling and frightening for me. Although I am passionate about research and engaging with the public TED talks are something different. The emphasis is on the speaker and not their slides – I will feel very exposed on the stage and am worried that I won’t do justice to the topic. Making medicines child sized. March 23, 2015. So I gave the TED talk on Saturday and I felt that it went ok. I don’t yet have the link to share but I will post that once it becomes available. The TED event was really interesting as it was my first one! A talk on why I should pay more inheritance tax was also thought provoking – what better tax than one you never pay as long as you live! I will definitely try to attend more public engagement events to learn about others research projects and to be inspired.

Making medicines child sized. July 23, 2015. July 23, 2015. I recently had some work experience students with me in the laboratory. It is always a pleasure to have young people learning about science and thinking about their future and what jobs they may want or not want to do. It makes you realise how little we talk to children and young people about our everyday working lives and how few jobs they actually understand – in fact that is probably true for most adults! Making medicines child sized. July 16, 2015. July 16, 2015. The one thing we have been struggling with is to identify a common food that has a gritty texture (similar to many medicines! But like us they struggled to think of many foods that were gritty – however we did receive new suggestions of like seeds on bread (poppy and sesame seeds); like the bits in strawberry or raspberry jam which are both really useful for us to explain to other children what gritty may be like.
