Domestic music – Lulu and the Lampshades, in a kitchen | The Quiet Room

A blog about Small Music. Domestic music – Lulu and the Lampshades, in a kitchen. Tags: Lulu and the Lampshades. And a simple, clear lyric that goes for detail and avoids cliche and banality. I’ve not seen this group. Incidentally, I’ve found that it always serves you well to record in a kitchen. You get a good lively sound compared to rooms with carpet. Thanks to Becky for showing me this video. From → Uncategorized. Larr; James Blake – negative space. More music from a kitchen →. Leave one →. The Rainc...

A blog about Small Music. The Raincoats – unexpectedly awesome Small Music from the usually piss-weak UK post punk indie scene. I only came across The Raincoats. Very recently, through the self publicist and controversialist Everett True. I don’t mean to endorse him particularly because he’s wrong about almost everything and produces a kind of pooterish. Here’s his blog. Note a rare Quiet Room embedding triumph! It’s also on Spotify. I was, however, disappointed by their album The Kitchen Tapes. You are ...

A blog about Small Music. Little Hands Clapping – Orgone Accumulator. Here’s a recording Tom and I made with a friend one afternoon. This song was named after devices built by the sincere but utterly wrong pseudoscientist Wilhelm Reich. Designed to gather energy from the atmosphere to treat people whose bodies were sick. Reich was immortalised by Kate Bush in her song Cloudbusting. And by playing fragile acoustic music. A week or so earlier we had made this recording at our friend Howard’s flat....

A blog about Small Music. A reader recently got in touch to ask whether I could put up Sam Amidon’s album, ‘Alone Inside My Head’, which I wrote a post about last year. It had been available as a free download on his website, but has since been taken down. Since it has been in the public domain for free, and isn’t to my knowledge ‘in print’ or available in any paid-for format, I don’t have any qualms about uploading it here. Here’s the link, for anyone interested: [. I’ll do a normal post soon. Follow &l...

Little Hands Clapping – Milterlude (Or: Ensmallened music) | The Quiet Room
https://thequietroom.wordpress.com/2012/01/02/little-hands-clapping-milterlude-or-ensmallened-music
A blog about Small Music. Little Hands Clapping – Milterlude (Or: Ensmallened music). Tags: Little Hands Clapping. One of the reasons I didn’t post anything here for ages was because I was busy finishing off Little Hands Clapping’s full-length album, The Unbroken Wave. The album – which you can download for free. Uses interludes to break up the assault of the main songs, and Kid A by Radiohead and 13 by Blur both make excellent use of interludes. Another is a standalone track which introduces a couple of...

A sketch – Bert Jansch | The Quiet Room
https://thequietroom.wordpress.com/2012/03/04/a-sketch-bert-jansch
A blog about Small Music. A sketch – Bert Jansch. I’ve tried to get into the habit of learning a new song (any that occurs to me on the day) whenever I get an hour or two to play. Today I’ve been picking my way towards a bass/chord/melody arrangement of the old jazz standard Guilty. Turns out there are a lot of chords in that song and my muscles are somewhat weaker than I remember. And, here he is, on his first album, aged about 22, playing an instrumental sketch called Finches. Was recorded at someone&#...

Bill Evans – The great introvert of modern jazz | The Quiet Room
https://thequietroom.wordpress.com/2011/05/02/bill-evans-the-great-introvert-of-modern-jazz
A blog about Small Music. Bill Evans – The great introvert of modern jazz. My first encounter with Bill Evans came, as I’m sure it did for many, through Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. LP But unlike many listeners who were knocked out from the off, I was disappointed when I first heard the album, coming to jazz from rock background and hoping for something more obviously badass from my first encounter with Miles. Soon enough I was getting those kicks from Bitches Brew. Enough about Kind of Blue – Evans ...
