this beautiful hunger: Keep Your Head Above Water

http://thisbeautifulhunger.blogspot.com/2011/09/september.html

Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Keep Your Head Above Water. I keep thinking this is it. I do my sad little wave, a quick bow. Goodbye, au revoir. Then I turn in my flip-flops and start my brief walk home. It's for this reason that I tolerate that ugly pool. I like swimming far out. But these days I listen to friends who say For fuck’s sake, Clare, be careful. Sun's out. Sitting here writing I keep one ear out for the waves, and my nostrils still sniff seaweed. This could be the day. Last week th...Really go...

this beautiful hunger: Under The Influence

http://thisbeautifulhunger.blogspot.com/2010/11/under-influence.html

Wednesday, November 17, 2010. I was in the upstairs spare bedroom singing along to Mary Coughlan's Under The Influence. Or Ice Cream Man. I don't remember which. It was my sister's LP, dragged from a dusty blue case beneath the dresser; slipped from its case and onto my old Rotel turntable. After twenty years, it still had hardly a scratch on it. I've been sneaking Under The Influence. A week after the funeral, I was back in Brighton and at work, decorating the house of an eight-. And have yourself a mer...

this beautiful hunger: A Handsome Man

http://thisbeautifulhunger.blogspot.com/2010/11/sunday.html

Friday, November 19, 2010. I’ve always run from the family line. I think myself autonomous, born anew, escaping the ghosts of my past. But we can never finally stand apart. Can a box full of images really give me back my history, restoring my sense of belonging somewhere? This is great to read, Clare. I love the gentle emotional richness that comes out when you describe your family. Layers of it. Struggle and ease, loss and abundance. Hope youre well x. 19 November, 2010 23:35. Thursday, May 06, 2010. If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next. Labels: Click the Title. Dont Let The Tories Back In. Whatever You Do Today. There is no vote here today because a UKIP candidate died; but I have never voted, because the main parties always fail to tackle the deep inequalities in our society - there has been no narrowing of the gap between rich and poor in the last 40 years! There are much more positive things people can do in the community than vote every few years. I hate the MS...

Writing Life: Manifesto

http://writinglife-clare.blogspot.com/2010/03/manifesto.html

Musings on life writing. Saturday, 27 March 2010. Keep on going through self-doubt, criticism, a sore back, rejection, ridicule and terror. Honour that tiny light that sparks sometimes when I touch keyboard or grip a pen. Let go of pride, decency, even ambition. Make that stab in the dark. Dwell in uncertainty and make friends with insecurity. Be hungry. Leap for that goal. Turn into a rainbow shoal of fish as I do it. Or a dead man in a stinking overcoat. Kiss the scabs on my fingers. Chill the fuck out.

Musings on life writing. Monday, 29 March 2010. Collect memories in a box with a set of index cards - every time you have a memory, write it down and put it in the box, in the right year. Alternatively, collect memories by theme. Whatever scares or blocks you right now in your writing process - write it down and throw inside. Everyone needs a map for where they're going in their book/piece, even if it's a messy one! Necessary for re-orientating the work at times. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Musings on life writing. Saturday, 27 March 2010. Dave Eggers on memoir (from 'A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius'). An acquaintance of the author's accosted him at a Western-themed restaurant/bar, while the author was eating a hearty plate of ribs and potatoes served fried in the French style. The accoster sat down opposite, asking what was new, what was up,. Asked the aquaintance. (Let's call him, oh, "Oswald.") What's it about? C'mon, don't pull that old trick, man! He had a point! Sink or Swim: Isle of Wight: swimming memories

http://sinkorswimclare.blogspot.com/2010/08/isle-of-wight-swimming-memories.html

Monday, 4 October 2010. Isle of Wight: swimming memories. Black sand in between bony toes. A kestrel circling the bay. My own nakedness against the wave. How it slapped my shoulder hard. A boy with a toy gun, another with a stone. Him reading on the shore. Crying quietly in the back of the car, to a folk tune I’d usually skip over. Chairlifts – how we flew across treetops, descending the cliff. Ice lolly. Salt on my lips all day. Top photo: courtesy Olivia Laing. Location: Isle Of Wight, UK.

Friday, August 14, 2015. Why We're Sending Our Daughter to Public School. I remember this time last year ( and the year before that. As I watched mama after mama post pictures of her babies walking into that gigantic school. They were decked out in new clothes and big smiles and all I could do was sit glued to my computer and THANK GOD it wasn't us. "I just don't know if I can ever do it! this beautiful inheritance – "The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance." – Psalm 16:6

The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. – Psalm 16:6. 100 Days of Prayer. December 11, 2016. The lyrics came into my mind last Thursday and I haven’t stopped thinking about that song or listening to it since. When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast. When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast. I could never keep my hold through life’s fearful path. For my love is often cold. He must hold me fast…”. Fine, God, do what you want.
