THIS IS OUR MUSIC.: Don't Give Up On Us

http://thisisourmusic.blogspot.com/2009/07/dont-give-up-on-us.html

THIS IS OUR MUSIC. Lasers in the jungle. Tuesday, July 7, 2009. Don't Give Up On Us. Is it a simple, and paralyzingly depressing case of an early-midlife crisis? Those are my days. Yeah, she was alright with that. So Google Maps and I devised an itinerary: I would hit Buffalo, rattle around, have a bite and then take in a ballgame on Friday, all before the big prize, Rochester. First thing I pulled out of my head was the Replacements, for those reasons I alluded to above. I was hoping to find some of...

THIS IS OUR MUSIC.: Darkness and Promise

http://thisisourmusic.blogspot.com/2010/11/darkness-and-promise.html

THIS IS OUR MUSIC. Lasers in the jungle. Monday, November 22, 2010. THE REASON I, and no doubt legions of other no-longer-boys staring down hairloss and paunchiness, am so excited about this ridiculous new Springsteen box thing. Is that it chronicles the Turning Point in the man's classic oeuvre. Simply: there is a transition in every man's life from Born to Run. To Darkness on the Edge of Town. A time when, suddenly, the rah-rah defiance of Born. SONY IS PROBABLY the best of the majors when it comes to ...

THIS IS OUR MUSIC.: March 2010

http://thisisourmusic.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

THIS IS OUR MUSIC. Lasers in the jungle. Tuesday, March 9, 2010. Mark Linkous, Sparklehorse. Very strange and sad to hear of Linkous' suicide on the weekend. I was assembling an iPod playlist for my wife's birthday celebrations on Saturday, and I stumbled across Good Morning, Spider. I threw "Sick of Goodbyes" on the list. What the hell, I thought. THIS IS OUR MUSIC.: #s 10-6

http://thisisourmusic.blogspot.com/2011/01/s-10-6.html

THIS IS OUR MUSIC. Lasers in the jungle. Monday, January 3, 2011. Truthfully, I long ago dismissed as fantasy any notion of having this all done by January 1st. It just wasn't going to happen. Having embraced this realpolitik, I found I actually slept more soundly, enjoyed food more, and treasured human connections to an even greater degree. It was liberating. That said, maybe we can wrap this up by week's end? No promises, of course. Onward. 10 Frightened Rabbit, The Winter of Mixed Drinks. 8 Exploding ...

Strictly culture.: Topic F, Part One: Stop rolling your eyes!

http://strictlyculture.blogspot.com/2007/04/topic-f-part-one-stop-rolling-your-eyes.html

Topic F, Part One: Stop rolling your eyes! Though he was sometimes derided as too gloomy and cynical, Vonnegut's most resonant messages have always been hopeful in the face of almost-certain doom. The quote above is taken from a nice Onion. As featured on their A.V. Club site. I think the point they make is more than valid; it's a highly accurate observation and a good (if small) instance of counterpoint to their own, often sneering, content (especially The Hater. No less, wow! But anyway, here it is):.

And when I have money to burn, I go. After all, CDs are still recordings, right? And when I made reference to. I suppose I meant mp3s, iPods, elbo.ws, eMusic, etc - music collected and/or consumed through a computer. Sorry for any confusion. Dated: Wednesday, March 28, 2007. File under: My Favorite Things. Topic D, Part 3: The Guest. NOTE: This was originally submitted by an anonymous reader as a comment, but I felt that the writing was quite strong; in fact, I felt it deserved its own post. Enjoy! Pardon my intrusion - stumbled across your blog and felt interested enough to comment. Hope that's kosher? Indie" music is becoming almost universally a commodity alone, so it's no surprising that it's being used to sell other stuff, especially when it seems to do that well. Great blog, keep it up. Topic E, Part Two: There will always be a bit of my heart devoted to it. I think I'll always have a use for it. I just hope there'll always be record stores to go to. A, "The Lost Art". Agreed. There is still something very satisfying about crawling through record stores. It has nothing to do with a highly consumerist, stereotypically feminine, love of shopping - that. Is the force that propels me into the nearest H&M. Esque fantasy; or maybe it really is. Dated: Tuesday, March 27, 2007. Death of a Party.

Strictly culture.: Topic D, Part 5: Cool Britannia

http://strictlyculture.blogspot.com/2007/03/topic-d-part-5-cool-britannia.html

Topic D, Part 5: Cool Britannia. I’m glad Miss Imperial brought up Britpop’s “indie” angle, because it seems to me that today’s “indie” scene bears many similarities to that pop explosion of a decade ago, in terms of trajectory. I’m grateful, too, for the input of our reader/guest poster. At its height, Britpop was inescapable (in Britain, obviously, but also in certain circles in North America, where even a cursory knowledge of Anglopopculture was an easy way to appear. The ubiquity and fractalization o...

The Bottom of the Order: October 2008

http://bottomoftheorder.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

The Bottom of the Order. Wednesday, October 29, 2008. Somewhere a Ghostrunner is Smiling. Holy goddamn, but Rocco Baldelli turned on that Madsen offering. This has been, maybe, the strangest World Series ever - barring maybe that earthquake thing in '89 - and a dinger by a previously hitless right fielder who's just come back from a ton of time off while he battled a mitochondrial disorder is pretty much fitting. Also, the Rays kind of have a '69 Mets vibe happening, which is appealing, no? Of course, as...

http://strictlyculture.blogspot.com/2007/03/topic-d-part-6-science-fiction-double.html

Topic d, part 6: science fiction/ double feature. Aside from watching the "cooler" strain of radio-friendly pop rock try on and then discard such identities as "alternative", "college rock", and now "indie" (all of which were taken to mean slightly different sounds, granted), i find it even more interesting that "indie" has now become an equally neutured and meaningless term in the movie business. I mean, not to call out. It doesn't seem fair to pit fall out boy against the killers. Maybe i need to ask m...

Strictly culture.: Topic E, Part 1: The Lost Art

http://strictlyculture.blogspot.com/2007/03/topic-e-part-1-lost-art.html

Topic E, Part 1: The Lost Art. I like the idea that almost anything I might want to hear is at the tips of my fingers. I like that I can carry a thousand songs in my pocket. I like finding new music while at the office. But I still. The act of record shopping. I went last week, moving my way up Bank Street, from Planet of Sound. Housed in the old 5 Arlington. A Studio 1 compilation, some Ken Vandermark, an out-of-print Matthew Shipp Quartet album, and Charles Mingus'. Complete Town Hall Concert.

Strictly culture.: Topic D, Part 4: Indie ain't nothing but a circuit.

http://strictlyculture.blogspot.com/2007/03/topic-d-part-4-indie-aint-nothing-but.html

Topic D, Part 4: Indie ain't nothing but a circuit. I recall the word "indie" being applied, in Britain, to the sound of the music instead of the situation of the band, much like Anonymous' definition below. I'm not sure how long this has been the case in the UK, but certainly during the Brit Pop. Era, I remember bands such as Blur. Being referred to as "indie" by the English press, even when their records were released by (and on) major labels. With no financial assistance beyond funding.
