Threads and traces

Musings from the museums, hills and prairies, past and present. Pelican in flight, Quinn Dam. At the end of March, we were looking at the beginning of spring, buds on the trees, no need for snow boots, etc. At the end of April, we have dug out from a cumulative 40 inches of snow. The buds are just now beginning to re-show. The migratory birds, slowed by the repeated storm, are starting to come through at last. So we headed east to Wall and Badlands to check out the spring action. Enjoy. Links to this post.

Threads and traces: May 2012

Nebraska in (almost) black and white. Tipi at Agate Fossil Beds, framing the Bone Cabin. For the first time since I moved back to the prairies, I was able to co-lead one of our field camps. This one focused on the geology and paleontology of Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, an under-appreciated gem in the Nebraska Panhandle. I had grand plans of posting something from there every night. For some reason, everything looked more real in black and white, except the eclipse. Bone Cabin, from Carnegie Hill.

Random chair in field. We were back in the Iron Lightning Badlands today, courtesy of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Cultural Preservation Office. After a good three months of warm temperatures and clear days, today was cold, damp, muddy, and even snowy at times. Welcome to spring on the northern Plains. As before, it was incredible. Petrified wood weathering out. Bare tree with tiny buds. Links to this post. Time travel to Utah. For me, it's like meeting a rock star (so to speak). Or being one. Highway ...

Friday, October 24, 2014. Ebola And Museums. Again. My friend and colleague Beth Merritt is always saying that museums need to be the heroes. But so little of what we do is truly heroic. But now, I think we have a genuine chance. People are wondering if they should travel by air; if they should let someone who's been to Africa teac...

Sunday, 19 June 2011. I have dozens of bookmarks, but never enough. I'm always looking for another one, and resorting to bits of torn newspaper instead. That's why I think that bookmarks make great small gifts. They come in handy for saying thank you, or when a birthday card isn't quite enough. These are also a good beading project to have handy in a bag with the chosen ribbons, beads, beading thread, a needle and embroidery scissors. I find them easy to grab as I run out the door! Threads and Thoughts

In George MacDonald's book, "The Princess and the Goblins," Princess Irene is given a ball of thread attached to a ring. Her Grandmother tells her that if ever she needs help, all she needs to do is follow the thread and it will lead Irene directly to her. This blog is a chronicle as I attempt to follow my own "thread". Saturday, February 21, 2015. Best Books of 2014. Of those 38, here are a few of my favorites.
