Tim's Matinee Blog

Wednesday, December 24, 2014. Goodbye, Harvard Exit. I went out of my way, last weekend, to visit a little movie house that will close down next month. The theater is called the Harvard Exit. My wife and I drove through the rain, parked on the street that the theater was named for, and had a little lunch - OK, a lot of lunch - before we headed in to see the movie. I took pictures of the old projector and the fireplace and the carpet. Theater carpets get me all nostalgic. It’s a thing. At a midnight showi...

Tim's Matinee Blog: December 2013

http://timsmatineeblog.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 17, 2013. Light Sabers Make No Sense. If you can use the Force to guide your laser sword, you can use it with your pistol. And make something less clumsy and random, while you're at it. Last night, at the Grand Illusion, I saw Space Battleship Yamato. We saw the mid-20th century battleship - one of the best two or three ever built - refitted as a space ship and sent into space. Our heroes launched the Black Tiger squadron and fought their way through Gamilon ships. Captain Avatar (w...

Tim's Matinee Blog: February 2013

http://timsmatineeblog.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 4, 2013. Finishing up Heroes and Villains month, we have a cowboy movie, with a stoic hero, a wacky sidekick, and an oily villain. But let’s start with the women folk. There are three female characters in Decision at Sundown. We meet Lucy on her wedding day, at the chapel, getting ready to marry our oily villain. Her gown isn’t white, but its an awfully pale blue, so let’s round her up to virgin. Enter our hero, the cowboy, Bart. This kind of cowboy embodies an honor society. In an h...

Tim's Matinee Blog: My God, what is it?

http://timsmatineeblog.blogspot.com/2014/03/my-god-what-is-it.html

Monday, March 24, 2014. My God, what is it? It’s easy to laugh at some of these old movies, and The Creeping Terror is worse than most. The movie revolves around a bizarre looking monster that is attacking people in a rural county in California. Here’s clip of the monster and the way that people don’t really run away from it. If you watched more than a few seconds of that, you’ll see the way the creature. I was surprised, though, at the first part of this scene, where the movie establishes the dance hall.

Tim's Matinee Blog: January 2013

Monday, January 28, 2013. The Rise of Darth Guffin. The McGuffin is a term Hitchcock coined for an object that didn’t have anything to do with the movie, but that moved the plot along. There was that weird statue that showed up at the end of. Full of microfilm, or gefilte fish, or something. The stolen money at the beginning of. Was a McGuffin - what, you don’t remember the money at the beginning of. Lots of filmmakers use McGuffins. In. Make no sense, but they keep things moving. And that suitcase in.

Tim's Matinee Blog: What's your stories?

http://timsmatineeblog.blogspot.com/2014/02/ive-gotten-tired-of-narrative-not.html

Sunday, February 23, 2014. I’ve gotten tired of narrative - not the concept, just the use of the word. People talk about how facts fit into a narrative of this or that. Sometimes, I think they mean theory in its literal sense - a system of ideas that help us organize observations. Sometimes, they just mean story. In 2007, Susan Faludi wrote a book called The Terror Dream. You know - The Searchers. The story of Comanche Station. But he saves her, anyway. The real villain of the movie is another cowboy&#46...

Insane Angels | Philosophy and Christianity.

The Best Bits…. Farewell from a Luddite. July 7, 2010. Well after about a year, and 110 posts, I have decided to call it quits on my blog. Why? Well because blogging and philosophy are incommensurable. This all may sound like I’m a defeatist of kinds, or that I’m experiencing some bitterness towards my chosen specialization. Far from it! I want to get. At philosophy. Blogging, however, will have no place in this. At least for the next little while. My parting advice to the loyal reader? June 26, 2010.

A random posting of new songs, as well as thoughts, plans, and record of events by a Detroit songwriter. Wednesday, March 11, 2015. Posted by Tim Wheeler. Tuesday, February 21, 2012. The Majority will always Vote for Democracy. It should come as no surprise that the majority of people want democracy. I keep hearing the the idea of promoting democracy throughout the world is a good thing. That’s because the majority will always vote for democracy. But, its also safe to say this:. Homosexuals don’t w...
