Is "ancient" rock 'n roll. The view from the ATC Tower at Kerkyra. The equipment was considerably more up-to-date than its counterpart in Iraklion. Our route was northwest, along the coast of Italy. We flew by Naples and Rome; but due to the clouds we saw neither. As we approached Elbe, the clouds cleared away, then we turned westward toward France. We crossed the northern tip of Corsica. We departed Cannes, then turned left after crossing the shoreline. I had a wonderful two week adventure, a once-in-a-...

My Turn to Fly. JP on the telephone with Saudi ATC in the Bahrain Weather Office. He did so, I retracted the flaps on schedule and we continued our climb to our assigned cruise altitude of 10,000 feet. During our climb, the departure controller in Bahrain gave us a series of left turns that pointed us westbound, then handed us off to the Saudi controller as we approached Dhahran. In case you hadn't realized it, Saudi Arabia is mostly desert. I approached the Red Sea with anticipation born from Biblical s...

Day in Dubai

Dubai - United Arab Emirates. Typical shop in the Dubai Gold Souk. Handle considerable amounts of traffic easily; but grind to a halt during rush hour. It's a very clean, modern city. Dubai has been called the Crown Jewel of the Middle East. I couldn't disagree. When we arrived at the Heritage Center. Traditional Arab basket weaving displayed at the Heritage Center in Dubai. That were available for rides; but not so much that I climbed on one. When we'd seen everything, we headed back for the hotel.

Even at our altitude they were magnificent. JP and I fell all over ourselves taking as many pictures as we could before our angle changed to the point they would be obscured by clouds once again. Even at the distance we were from them they were pretty impressive. Note that the city has expanded right to them. After Cairo, the airway made a left turn that took us over Alexandria.

Iraklion to Corfu

We obtained our weather briefing, then went to the air traffic control tower. Our route took us over several islands along the west coast of Greece. Instrument flying charts show navigational aids not cities, so despite the clouds below us, we dug out an atlas and had a marvelous time trying to identify islands and towns we flew by. Greece has some spectacular mountains. View from my hotel room in Corfu. Sitting on a large rock, that overlooked the harbor. We didn't get very far before we realized it...

Art from the 15th century B.C.E. in a temple at Deir-el-Bahri in the Valley of the Kings. I awoke shortly before the wake up call and went down to the restaurant. Sayyed met us at 6:30. What can one say when faced with 4,000 year old art. Like most people, I've been impressed by ancient Egyptian displays in museums; but that's nothing more than disconnected artifacts. Faced with the real thing in the place it was made leaves me speechless.

Getting There - Cincinnati to Dubai

The Longest Day - Cincinnati to Dubai. 14 - 15 April 2002. Check in proved to be a bit of a hassle. The agent had to reissue the ticket to account for the extra leg. Consequently, I didn't have to wait outside for Jen very long. When she arrived I loaded the pills and a few extra goodies she brought along into my suitcase. We hugged goodbye and I headed off toward the gate. Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris. Despite what I'd read on the UAE's propaganda Web site, I'd had little confidence that a single,...

The Adventure of a Lifetime Begins. But first we have to change the oil. When the oil was drained we put on a new filter then dumped 7 quarts of AeroShell's finest into the crankcase. We were pretty filthy by the time we were done. We went back into the building and cleaned the oil off our hands as best we could. I don't know about the men's room; but the women's room didn't have any soap capable of cleaning my hands. Climbing out over Dubai. The most interesting aspect for me was the GPS. I had never se...
