What are birth defects? Birth defects, also called congenital disorders. Is a term used for any physical abnormality present from birth, though in many cases they are not recognised until much later. Birth defects the problem. It need not be like this. Up to 70% of birth defects are preventable or treatable, often with simple interventions - so why aren’t we making much progress? One reason is that the size of the problem is under-reported and therefore receives less attention.
