Sauer & Steiner: September 2007

Wednesday, 26 September 2007. A few "quick" planes. After working on a few jointers and several large panel planes - I needed to build something small. Small does not always translate into easier - holding a 3-3/4" plane on an anvil and piening requires one's fullest attention! But the parts themselves are that much smaller - with fewer dovetails. these planes go together quite a bit quicker than a two foot jointer. After draw filing, I use sandpaper to finish it off. I start with 320 grit, then to 4...

Sauer & Steiner: April 2007

Saturday, 14 April 2007. A few comments on some remarkable chisels. Japanese tools have always intrigued me. They are very different than our western tools, but have some superior thinking behind them. Saws are a perfect example. Cutting on the pull stroke takes full advantage of the tension in the blade. Brilliant! Posted by Konrad at 19:57. Subscribe to Post Comments [ Atom. Thursday, 12 April 2007. And here I thought 22-1/2" was big! This is where I really learned to appreciate just how big this plane...

Thursday, 30 August 2007. The perfect woodworking show. I am sitting in the lounge at Heathrow airport waiting for my flight home reflecting back on an amazing week in England. Where to begin! A very good friend of mine, Mike Hancock. My only concern England = rain. Mike was quick to add there was a chef hmmmm an interesting twist on burnt spider dogs over the open fire. The sun was shining, no humidity and it was hot. The Festival of the tree. Was held at the Westonbirt Arboretum. A one week competition...

Friday, 20 July 2007. What’s with all the "General green"? My last three large tools have all been painted General Green . Now one was supposed to be the General 130 thickness planer but the vintage jointer and this workbench well, it's not natural. I should back up a bit. The top is maple and the base is oak. The drawer fronts and exposed surfaces of the drawer cabinet are also oak. There are two pocket doors that pull forward and cover the drawers. An amazing bench to say the least! Ok So back to the G...

Sauer & Steiner: June 2007

Thursday, 28 June 2007. 28 walnuts and 4 mummies. We are renovating again. The sunroom above our front porch is a great room which we had been using as a TV room. It had a few issues though. Crappy windows, old carpet, poor insulation and powder blue paint throughout. Need I say more. I did find a treasure in the ceiling - an old toy chicken. I also kept a few of the cut nails that were in some of the T&G boards. PS - there were no squirrels in the chicken. Posted by Konrad at 11:49. 19 July 2007 at 23:57.
