A Trail To Naturalism

A Trail To Naturalism. Journal of my studies and experiences in nature. Monday, August 29, 2011. I've started a new blog for anyone who's interested in reading it. It's at http:/ forestmusic.wordpress.com/. Sunday, February 8, 2009. I don't know why I stopped posting on here. Maybe I'll be able to get back in the habit. I've been visiting my sit-spot much more regularly now and I'm really getting to know those woods a lot better. I've also just ordered the Kamana. Actually I saw a whole bunch of them!

A Trail To Naturalism: November 2008

http://www.trailtonaturalism.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

A Trail To Naturalism. Journal of my studies and experiences in nature. Sunday, November 30, 2008. Early New Year Resolution. I have been drinking way too much soda and eating way too much fast food lately. ok. My whole life. I know how bad both of those things are for me and I've wanted to cut them out of my diet completely for a long time now. Unfortunately I haven't wanted it bad enough. Another thing I've been wanting to do lately is to start the second level of the Kamana. 2 books in two months.

A Trail To Naturalism: Tanning 3

http://www.trailtonaturalism.blogspot.com/2008/12/tanning-3.html

A Trail To Naturalism. Journal of my studies and experiences in nature. Friday, December 5, 2008. I finally got around to scraping that hide yesterday. I used my home-made scraper which I love. I basically just took a 5" long piece of quarter inch thick steel, bolted it to a tree branch and rounded off the top of the end until it was sharp. This is the hide almost completely scraped. A Trail To Naturalism: Tanning 4

http://www.trailtonaturalism.blogspot.com/2008/12/tanning-4.html

A Trail To Naturalism. Journal of my studies and experiences in nature. Sunday, December 7, 2008. I pulled the hide out of the egg and water mixture and got it ready for wringing. I lashed a broom to a forked branch of a tree and draped the hide over it. Then I rolled it up into a ring on the broom handle, stuck a shovel through the bottom of the ring and started twisting. Next, I spent a long while stretching and pulling the hide so that the fibers wouldn't glue themselves back together. Impatience....

Adventures in Nature: Bobcat, Tomtit and Dagger Lakes Adventure

http://heartinnature.blogspot.com/2008/09/bobcat-tomtit-and-dagger-lakes.html

Wednesday, September 3, 2008. Bobcat, Tomtit and Dagger Lakes Adventure. Jason, Steven and I hiked out way back into the forest East of the Alderleaf property today. In preparation for the school year, Jason wanted to show me around the lakes up there. While we were moved some large outdoor mats from the open grassy area near the barn, we found an interesting creature under the very first one. This little fellow with the black spotted throat is a western toad ( Bufo boreas. Not far off the property we ma...

Adventures in Nature: November 2008

http://heartinnature.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 12, 2008. Invasive Species, a different perspective. Any species, including its seeds, eggs, spores, or other biological material capable of propagating that species, that is not native to that ecosystem; and whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. This definition was taken from the website called invasive.org. I had the pleasure of getting to study one particular invasive species - the nutria (Myocastor coypus). It is frig...

Adventures in Nature: August 2008

http://heartinnature.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 14, 2008. Urban Wildlife of Seattle's Seward Park. I was working at a summer camp this week at the little forested peninsula that sticks out into Seattle's Lake Washington. It goes by the name of Seward Park. My gratitude goes out to them, to all of the staff at the summer camp and to the park itself. One of the first really exciting things that the children located this week was a relatively fresh aplodontia ( Aplodontia rufa. Carcass on the side of a trail. When we arrived, the bod...

Adventures in Nature: September 2007

http://heartinnature.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 7, 2007. My friend Phu, and I made a trip out to the semi-arid landscapes of eastern Washington. We were out there for a total of 2 and half days and 2 nights. Our main focus was to get to know and photograph the wild canyons and rolling wheat fields that make up the Palouse region. Here are some highlights from that trip. Both of us thought this was a dramatic start to our trip, and a perhaps positive omen hinting at the incredible things to come. Our lack of experience with it created...

Adventures in Nature: February 2009

http://heartinnature.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, February 4, 2009. Monarchs in Pismo Beach. Recently I had the great pleasure to be in the area of Pismo Beach, CA while there was a good number (some 20,000 or so! Monarch butterflies. They overwinter in a stand of eucalyptus not far from the beach. The little grove had a rather other-worldly feel to it when I walked across the street and stepped into its shadows. Initially I only saw a few butterflies perched here and there on railings, low branches and other such places. The sight was incred...

Adventures in Nature: January 2008

http://heartinnature.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 6, 2008. An introduction to Union Bay Natural Area: Turtles. Seattle is the emerald city. Still the greenest city I have seen anywhere, with many parks and green spaces throughout. Surprisingly, wildlife abounds in the city. Crows, owls, eagles, coyotes, raccoons and many other creatures are common through out the city and its many neighborhoods. It is still a wildlife gem. It even shows up in Wikipedia! These turtles are hardy, can tolerate relatively cool temperatures and if it gets too...
