Travels with birds: May 2015

http://travellingbirder.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, 28 May 2015. Temples, Magic Woods and mudflats. 5 May 2015, South-eastern China - Day 3. Yang Kou and Dong Tai. Started early at the Temple Woods. It was a bright, smog free and unusually clear morning with blue skies and sunshine: not ideal for migrant arrivals. At this stage it was incredibly difficult to know which siberian stunner to give attention to. Suddenly the thrush was flushed (there were two other birding groups in and around this tiny patch of trees) and we followed it carefully ge...

Travels with birds: Nocturnal Herons, clay rabbits and plastic ducks

http://travellingbirder.blogspot.com/2011/07/nocturnal-herons-clay-rabbits-and.html

Tuesday, 12 July 2011. Nocturnal Herons, clay rabbits and plastic ducks. I ran the moth trap overnight on 1 July and had a reasonable catch 147 moths of 34 species including a smart Scarce Silver Lines, a couple of Rosy Footman, Scarce Footman and three Coronet. Gary Howard talked me into a twitch today. Not just any twitch - a duck twitch! A Marbled Duck had been found on Arlington Reservoir, just inland of Beachy Head in East Sussex. Marbled Duck, Arlington Reservoir, East Sussex. 31 October 1985 Lower...

Monday, 18 May 2015. Brilliant blue and fiery flashes. May 2015, South-eastern China - Day 2. Nanhui and Yang Kou. The pools produced 2 Mandarin, a brief Baillons Crake, a Reed Parrotbill, 2 Chinese Egret,. 8 Night Heron,. Although skulking under the hedge it would venture out for the supplied mealworms. Blue and White Flycatcher flicks away. And then gives itself up - what a stunner. A flock of Japanese White-eye. Blue and White Flycatcher. Blue and White Flycatcher. Blue and White Flycatcher. We were e...

Paul Matson's Birding Blog. Harpy Eagle, Venezuela, April 2016. Friday, 27 February 2015. Friday 27th February - Winter Surfing Excursion. On finding the correct car park, with lots of birders on the beach (non of whom had yet entered the water), it was within seconds that the Surf Scoter. Was visible, with 2 Common Scoters. And best of all a large (presumably female) Goshawk. Seen on 3 occasions between 1.30pm and 2pm. 2 Ravens. Also flew over and in the garden a brief burst of song from a Firecrest.

http://paulmatsonbirdsandstuff.blogspot.com/p/vietnam-march-2014.html

Paul Matson's Birding Blog. Harpy Eagle, Venezuela, April 2016. The temperature in Saigon and the South reached the high to mid 30's in the afternoon and it was a dry heat. As we moved North not only did the temperature drop but we had a real mixture of rain, fog and some chilly weather. Some observations about Vietnam . Like other parts of South East Asia, the natural rainforest resources do not appear to have a cherished status of preservation despite some places obtaining the National Park label. ...

Paul Matson's Birding Blog. Harpy Eagle, Venezuela, April 2016. Monday, 12 January 2015. Sunday 11th January - Muddy Legs. An unexpected ending to the day. I hadn't been for a walk from the house for a long while, so decided to do just that this morning, especially as the weather looked good for the first part of the day, a slight frost was on the ground as I climbed over the garden fence just after 8am and headed up to the lane. A Great Spotted Woodpecker. Was in the big arable field, several Siskin.

Paul Matson's Birding Blog. Harpy Eagle, Venezuela, April 2016. Tuesday, 6 January 2015. Tuesday 6th January - Grey, grim, damp and Dusky. Chi gravel pits are a place I normally drive straight past without a look - a decent lake complex that has turned up good birds and at the very least holds an number of waterfowl, so I'm not sure what it is but I just find the place unappealing to walk around and I'm not sure that the grey damp start today endeared me to the place any more. After another 5 minutes wai...

Paul Matson's Birding Blog. Harpy Eagle, Venezuela, April 2016. Friday, 6 March 2015. Friday 6th March - Winter Shrike. Went for a walk on Iping Common this morning. A cool wind and grey skies suggested Winter isn't giving up easily. The Great Grey Shrike. A brief view of a Dartford Warbler. And Stonechat, a singing. And the distant calls of Woodlark. Were the only other activity. The Iping Great Grey Shrike. Cows employed to graze the heathland at Stedham. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Paul Matson's Birding Blog: Saturday 24th January - Winter in West Sussex

Paul Matson's Birding Blog. Harpy Eagle, Venezuela, April 2016. Sunday, 1 February 2015. Saturday 24th January - Winter in West Sussex. With a cold bright day on the cards, Gary and I decided that we would visit a variety of sites in West Sussex with little to tempt us further afield. We started the day at East Head, West Wittering (twinned with Battersea Dogs Home) seeing an early Red Kite. Was the first bird seen on the marsh which quickly departed calling. We then found the 3 Spoonbill. We then drove ...

Paul Matson's Birding Blog: Mongolia May 2014

http://paulmatsonbirdsandstuff.blogspot.com/p/mongolia-may-14.html

Paul Matson's Birding Blog. Harpy Eagle, Venezuela, April 2016. There has always been something about Mongolia which has fascinated me from childhood - whether it's the stories of the Mongol empire being the largest Empire ever in the world or the marauding hoards of Mongols led by Ghengis Khan causing havoc over the vast open plains, whatever had held my fascination encouraged me to choose this as a destination for this trip after Gary Howard and I discussed this last year and agreed we should go. Tempe...

Paul Matson's Birding Blog. Harpy Eagle, Venezuela, April 2016. Ecuador 1st - 18th August 2012. I'd wanted to go to South America for a long time. I had an aborted attempt in 2007 when a couple of weeks before a trip to the coastal rain forests of SE Brazil I had to cancel due to work commitments. So only 5 years later my chance at last. No particular reason to choose Ecuador other than it's famed number of birds and the dates seemed to work! Along with a, Rusty Flowerpiercer. Before heading out to try a...

Paul Matson's Birding Blog. Harpy Eagle, Venezuela, April 2016. Thursday, 8 January 2015. Wednesday 7th January - Iping. The weather remains grey and cold and there were some damp patches in the blustery, cloudy but mainly dry morning. Walking out from the car park 4 Lesser Redpoll. Flew over calling and a small group of 6 Reed Bunting. Were disturbed. As with many heather and gorse commons at this time of year there were virtually no birds, just dogwalkers. A Green Woodpecker. Then a pair of Stonechat.

Travelling with B!

Sunday, May 24, 2009. Dortmund, Cologne (Köln), and Düsseldorf. So, after having had finished all my exams, I decided to visit B in Dortmund (which is where he goes to university for the semester). After getting there half an hour late because public transportation in Dortmund is never on time, it was already late enough to just go to B's home and half a glass of wine and watch a movie. The next day, we only had the morning to take a look at Dortmund. But it doesn't really have any sights anyway and ...

How To Make It As An Online Mattress Company. June 30, 2015. Given that there have been so many new companies that sell mattresses directly to consumers online, I thought I would give my thoughts on what it would take to be successful in that market. A lot of companies have already been very successful in this space, but there are so many new companies coming in that it might be tough to sustain that success for the long-term. Here are my thoughts. For more on why free shipping is so important). Is a big...
