On building a small cluster | Workshop in Applied Phylogenetics
http://treethinkers.org/on-building-a-small-cluster
On building a small cluster. Treethinkers reader Nick left a comment on one of my earlier posts asking for some details about the cluster that I built for my lab. I’ll do that with this post. I’ll start by outlining some information about the cluster, list the specific parts I used (although note that this was two years ago, so good choices would likely be different today), and then give a couple of general thoughts on building and maintaining your own cluster. Shuttle SH67H3 Barebones PC. Some spare bac...

UPDATE: Must read papers for graduate students | Workshop in Applied Phylogenetics
http://treethinkers.org/update-must-read-papers-for-graduate-students
UPDATE: Must read papers for graduate students. Following up on my previous post. Here is the list of ‘Must Read’ papers in phylogenetics that were suggested on Twitter. I think that this is a great start, even though it is missing some classics and some important topics (divergence time estimation, for example). Thanks to everyone for chipping in with their thoughts and thanks again to Matt Hahn and Matt Pennell for getting the conversation started. 3), 384 397. Felsenstein, J. (1985). Confidenc...Felse...

The relationship between prior sensitivity and extinction probabilities in BAMM. By Brian R. Moore, Sebastian Höhna, Michael R. May, Bruce Rannala, and John P. Huelsenbeck. 2016) explored the statistical behavior of BAMM (Rabosky, 2014). One of the pathologies demonstrated in our paper is the extreme prior sensitivity. The prior sensitivity issue with BAMM, although it uniquely conceals. BAMM (Rabosky, 2014) attempts to estimate: (1) the number and location of diversification-rate shifts, and; (2) the di...
New Bayesian methods for inferring rates of lineage diversification! | Workshop in Applied Phylogenetics
http://treethinkers.org/new-bayesian-methods-for-inferring-rates-of-lineage-diversification
Just a quick update on some recent work—by. The marvelous Mike May and sensational Sebastian Höhna—that we’re very excited about in the Moore lab. Each of the events is described by a separate compound Poisson process (CPP) model,. Where the waiting times between each event are exponentially distributed with event-specific rate parameters. The magnitude of each event is drawn from an event-specific prior distribution. Parameters of the model are then estimated using a reversible-jump Markov chain...Where...

Emily recently joined the Phylo Lab (Welcome Emily! She is a third-year undergraduate student majoring in biological sciences. Emily fell in love with phylogenetics as a student in BIS 2C (which shows impeccable taste), and is combining this new love with her old passion for human health by helping Jay with a project exploring "phylodynamic" models used to study viral evolution. We are also hoping to convert her to a coffee drinker. Traveler. Artist. Tea Enthusiast. Fighter, dancer, writer, musician.

July 22, 2015. Wood-be computer chip contender. A new kind of computer chip has been developed which uses biodegradable wood instead of silicon. It has been developed by a group led by engineering professor Zhenqiang (Jack) Ma at the University of Wisonsin. The chip uses wood to replace the silicon used for the chips’ base, though silicon is still used for the components this is a reduction in silicon of about 95%. Follow Blog via Email. Tree Thoughts for Christians Seeking True Rest
Being IN Christ can never be replaced by doing FOR Christ.". Besides, it's exhausting. Choosing the Lamb of God Over Barabbas. On Feb 12, 2014 in Articles. Even now, after nineteen centuries of Christ’s influence have modified the popular ideals, what chance have they? Are the popular ‘heroes’ of Christian nations saints, teachers, lovers of men, in whom their Christ-likeness is the thing venerated? Better be condemned with Jesus than adopted with Barabbas.”.
