The Carolina Silverbell is a deciduous woodland tree native to the central and southern United States. It gets its name from the beautiful bell-shaped blossoms that hang from the branches in mid-spring. These blossoms, about 3/4 inch long, are usually pure white, but can also be pink. Whatever the color, they have a delicate beauty that no one will forget. It has larger leaves and flowers than the smaller form. Has been changed to Halesia tetraptera. The Dwarf Chestnut Oak is a small deciduous tree native to much of the eastern and central United States. It gets its name from its toothed elliptically-shaped leaves, which resemble those of a chestnut tree. Another common name for the species is Dwarf Chinkapin Oak. The plant is a member of the white oak family and a cousin of the Chestnut (or Rock) Oak. There are several other small native oaks, including Georgia Oak (Quercus georgiana). All known living specimens are cultivated plants probably descended from a few trees (or possibly just one tree) grown in the garden of the eighteenth-century botanists John and William Bartram. The Franklinia is also called Ben Franklin Tree, or Franklin Tree, a name given to it by the Bartrams in honor of their friend Benjamin Franklin. The species name "alatamaha" is an old spelling for the name of the river on which the plant was discovered.
