I grew up in a Welsh coal port, and my memories are of a childhood spent amongst. The debris of an obsolete industrial landscape. This began a lifelong fascination with things mechanical. Later there were bicycles, motorbikes and other machines. When I began making sculptures these memories influenced me,. Both formally and emotionally. Trefor Prest was born in South Wales in 1945. He attended Croydon College of Art in1960,. Was expelled in 1961 and migrated to Australia. He had an undistinguished two year military career. As a tank driver in the Australian Army from 1966-68. He studied sculpture at the. National Gallery Art School, Melbourne from 1971-1973. During that time he also gained a welding. Gallery of Some Earlier Work. My concern in making these sculptures is to emphasise the interaction. Between the inner and the outer. I try to suggest the presence of purposeful forms beneath the outer shell of the object. Sometimes the shell is punctured to emphasise this. The work often develops from a “vessel “, reflecting the human body, which in itself. Is an outer form defined by its contents. Although I enjoy drawing I rarely use it as a starting point, preferring instead.
