Truffle Growing in NC

Thursday, June 25, 2015. Black Winter Truffling in the Summertime. Summer around here is HOT! This year and I'm looking forward to getting some relief. Rain has been very scarce as well. We've had some afternoon showers accompanied by thunder storms (which Dazy hates! But not enough rain to keep the pond full. Oh well, it's good and deep. I was out there this morning spraying the stuff. I only use it sparingly and carefully and rarely in the orchard, just around the edges where nuisances occur. If you ha...

Thursday, November 7, 2013. Well, Here it is November and I'm wondering where the time goes. I'm sure you can all relate. The truffle orchards look good overall. We had so much rain this past summer that I have actually used the irrigation system more since Labor Day than I did the whole previous season. That's a first! Here are some pictures I took last week of the trees in the big orchard in varying stages of dropping their leaves. Yep, All those big limbs will be going away. If that theory pans out, w...

Sunday, December 8, 2013. Dazy Finds the First Truffle of the Season! Dazy was one excited little dog when she found the first truffle of the season last Monday! Truffle in the Center. Ice on the pond. That really makes it special to me. The tree where Dazy made her find is 6 years old. Let's just hope there are LOTS more where that came from. Keeping my fingers crossed! Truffle on the Scale - 3.14 oz. I really have no idea (as usual) what this truffle season will bring or when it will start in earnest s...

Here's the scoop. Stay tuned. There's more news coming. Hint: Watch for Our State Magazine. In a few weeks. I'll be planting 10-15 more inoculated trees - Holly oaks - from Virginia Truffle. All inoculated and at various stages of maturity and potential. Visit via the link or come in person OR both! As the truffl...

Tuesday, May 13, 2014. Time to Add Some Lavender to the Mix. I had no idea how long it had been since I connected with my truffle friends. FaceBook and Twitter just aren't enough. I was feeling very disconnected and now I know why. Let me bring you up to speed. Entirely too hot for May here in the foothills. I think I heard yesterday on the local weather report that it hadn't been this hot for this long in May since 2006. Our weather patterns are definitely changing. And here's a better look at an oak&#4...

The Truffle Haus

Sunday, January 11, 2009. This Pacific Heights Gem serves up food to match its name. 2049 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA between California and Pine. Click here. To see a map. This restaurant is a little on the more expensive side with the average entree running between $25 and $35 a person. Our waiter was attentive, but not intrusive, polished but not aloof. Upon discovering that my wife was expecting, the bar tender mixed her up a tropical spritzer so she wouldn't feel excluded. This restaurant was...
