DC Tropics: Begonia update

http://dctropics.blogspot.com/2015/07/begonia-update.html

Saturday, July 25, 2015. Garden in recovery (note dead palm trunk at lower left). A few weeks ago, I wrote about the new begonia seedlings I planted out in the garden (see New begonias, off to a late start. At the time they didn't look like much, but what a difference 5 weeks makes! Begonia bed, June 20. Begonia bed, July 25. Despite the rex-like foliage I hesitate to call them "rex begonias" because any actual B. rex. Also involved. Unlike the rhizomatous B. rex. And Hardy begonias: the next generation.

http://dctropics.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 17, 2015. Spring waits for no man. Herbaceous peony (unknown cultivar). A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the three days of glory. Whose Latin name means kinda shrubby) and related species with persistent woody stems that might grow a few feet tall at most.  Now its time for the more familiar herbaceous peonies, the perennial kind that dies to the ground every winter, and tend to bloom a bit later. DC Tropics: Fabulous Fatsia

http://dctropics.blogspot.com/2013/11/fabulous-fatsia.html

Thursday, November 7, 2013. Something spooky-looking emerges in my garden in the fall. Every October without fail, shortly before Halloween, fat buds begin to swell on my Fatsia japonica. For one thing, it gets big. And it blooms. And it does the most amazing thing in winter, something you'll never see it do indoors. For those of us in zone 7, Fatsia japonica. Is a plant that is still uncommon enough to be interesting and even surprising. At the United States National Arboretum. Which really is most sple...

DC Tropics: Backlighting makes all the difference

http://dctropics.blogspot.com/2015/08/backlighting-makes-all-difference.html

Saturday, August 15, 2015. Backlighting makes all the difference. Ornamental millet, backlit by the morning sun. Too many gardens, too many photos, too little time! I'm still trying to catch up with the 500 photos I took during the Perennial Plant Association symposium. How will I ever catch up? Does anybody remember the days when you had a couple of rolls of film and had to make sure every one of those 48 or 72 frames really counted? United States National Arboretum. Sunday, April 19, 2015. Begonia Helen Teupel, sold unlabeled. In an online begonia group that I frequent, not a day goes by that somebody doesnt post one or more photos of begonias they got from a friend, or purchased without any label, asking what is it? Click here to continue reading. Links to this post. Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Pollarding, or just plain murder? Pollarded crape myrtles, National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. DC Tropics: February 2015

http://dctropics.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 26, 2015. What can I say, I'm one of those people who needs a day or two to recover from a vacation! I also need a bit of time to sort through several hundred photos, upload them to Flickr, and get labels and captions on them. So for now, just a few quick photos from our recent vacation in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. More photos and a bit of commentary coming later! Good-bye, frozen Washington, DC! Hello, sunny and warm Ft. Lauderdale! Sunset over the Intracoastal Waterway. Tuesday, Febru...

http://dctropics.blogspot.com/2015/07/kenilworth-aquatic-gardens.html

Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Lotus ( Nelumbo nucifera. At Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. I've been making an effort to get out and visit more gardens this year, so when Washington Gardener Magazine. Announced they were having a "tweet-up" at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens. Acres and acres of lotus. Administered by the National Park Service. Tidal marsh; plants are submerged at high tide. One day out of the year, the Lotus and Water Lily Festival. Visitors admiring the lotus. There was food and live music, a...
