Turfgrass disease updates for golf courses: August 2011

http://turfdiseases.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Sun, Ice, and Climatological Normals. Sunday, August 21, 2011. Since my last post I've been to England and the UAE, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, and Japan. I've seen most grass types but not many diseases; a bit of fairy ring, some dollar spot, slime mold, and Curvularia. What I have seen is a lot of variability in the weather, and especially in Asia I have seen the typical cloud cover, rain, and associated low sunshine hours that are so widespread during these months of the year. Turf Disease Identification

Many diseases occur on the turfgrasses that are used throughout North Carolina. Most of the diseases included here are caused by fungi. Some problems that resemble diseases are caused by environmental or management factors such as cold, heat, drought, high soluble salts, soil compaction, or chemical damage. Careful identification of the cause of a problem is important for the selection of proper control methods. HOW TO USE THIS PROGRAM. Select the Turfgrass type (host turf) that is affected.

Turf Disease Management Decision Aid

How to use this program. Turfgrasses are most susceptible to disease when they are stressed or growing slowly. As a result, the most severe disease problems on cool-season grasses occur during the summer, and most diseases in warm-season grasses develop in the fall and spring. Grasses that are healthy and vigorously growing are far more resistant to disease than grass that is poorly managed, and they will also recover more quickly should disease develop. Many systemic fungicides lose effectiveness due to...
