Open Door Open Mind. The reflection and ramblings of a priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Chicago. Saturday, January 21, 2012. Epiphany III B A Change of Work. I have changed my work at least three different times. My first two professional jobs after my masters degree were at non-profit health services organizations, where I was a kind of data cruncher and writer of program grants. I knew I was more suited to teaching, which required me to go to school again. As my money began to run out, ...

Open Door Open Mind: October 2011

Open Door Open Mind. The reflection and ramblings of a priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Chicago. Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Proper 26A Pride and Power. Today’s gospel, if it were to have a title might be called Pride and Power, although it has little resemblance to anything Jane Austen wrote. The abuse of power that Jesus confronts today in the Jewish synagogue seems much more like the abuses that the Occupy Wall Street groups are protesting. The community of Matthew seemed to be wrestl...

Open Door Open Mind. The reflection and ramblings of a priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Chicago. Wednesday, September 21, 2011. Proper 21 A Cultivating the Mind of Christ. Our minds are precious commodities, as we sometimes find out when someone we love loses their cognitive abilities. Michael J. Fox, the actor, was diagnosed with a nervous system disease, Parkinson’s, that may lead to various problems with brain function, including dementia. As Paul sees it, the mind of Christ is the min...

Open Door Open Mind: July 2011

Open Door Open Mind. The reflection and ramblings of a priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Chicago. Tuesday, July 26, 2011. Proper 11 A Weeds in our Wheat. Darnel is a ryegrass that as it begins to grow looks much like wheat. Roman law prohibited the sowing of darnel in an enemy’s wheat field, so Jesus today is talking to an audience who would have been aware of such an act and its illegality. We might say this about some people as well. On a first impression some people may seem to be not o...

Open Door Open Mind: Easter V B Connections

Open Door Open Mind. The reflection and ramblings of a priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Chicago. Wednesday, May 2, 2012. Easter V B Connections. We are more connected physically than we ever knew. While there are differences in skin color and other visible features between whites and blacks, we are finding that these differences are only superficial. In 2008, researchers found that people of African descent differed in only 383 out of the 9,156 human genes they examined. In three instance...

And Also With You: August 2005
http://raisinthebar.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_archive.html
And Also With You. Wednesday, August 31, 2005. For All the Saints, Who From Their Labors Rest. I ask your prayers as we travel to Allentown, PA for the funeral of John's mom, Ruth. Ruth died at the age of 94 early Tuesday morning. She loved to sing and to laugh, and I thank her for producing six terrific children - especially the youngest. Noah is the organist for the funeral, and he'll be playing For All the Saints. As well as other great hymns that the Horn family loves. Posted by Raisin at 10:31 AM.

Open Door Open Mind. The reflection and ramblings of a priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Chicago. Tuesday, April 17, 2012. Easter II B "A little doubt will do ya". 8220;If all the kids were jumping off a cliff would you join them? In fact, at the University of Kentucky, one colleague thought he was being disparaging when he called me a contrarian. I thought a minute about his comment, then decided I kind of liked not going along with the crowd. He wasn’t one to go along with the crow...

Open Door Open Mind. The reflection and ramblings of a priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Chicago. Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Do you remember being in the store with your kids in tow, looking at something for a moment only to turn around and find your kids gone? Do you remember the panic and moment of sheer terror? Or maybe you remember being the kid who turns away for a minute only to find your parents are missing. Whether you are the found or the seeker today, this gospel speaks to you.
