Finding God's Abundant Blessings In Ordinary Life. Are You a DeFacto Catholic Like Me? Coming of age in that setting, I considered my faith a de facto component of who I was. Just like my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother before me, in the line of my great-uncle the priest and eldest aunt the Sister, I was. Continue reading →. This entry was posted in Catholicism. James Bawden: Canadian TV: Going South
http://jamesbawden.blogspot.com/2015/06/canadian-tv-going-south.html
Saturday, June 13, 2015. Canadian TV: Going South. I've been reporting for decades on the phenomenon of American telefilms and series moving north to shoot just because it's cheaper. But how often has a Canadian series moved south? Well, three Canadian series have gone south in recent years and nobody seems to have noticed it. First there's the perennial favorite Property Virgins. For the first 10 seasons and 130 episodes it was filmed in and around Toronto starring Toronto realtor Sandra Rinomato. What ...

James Bawden: June 2015
http://jamesbawden.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 28, 2015. I Remember Patrick Macnee. Excuse me, old chap, mind if I sit beside you? The speaker was the great British actor Patrick Macnee- yes, that's right John Steed of TV's Avengers. And the occasion was a lavish 1989 NBC dinner for the premiere of the TV version of Around The World In 80 Days. Macnee died June 26, aged 93, at his home in Rancho Mirage, California. Macnee whisked in late and took the vacant seat next to me and we chatted for hours about his illustrious career. Did a Haml...

James Bawden: January 2015
http://jamesbawden.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, January 31, 2015. I Remember Don Harron. I was fortunate to meet and interview Don Harron on several occasions during my decades long run as a TV critic. Harron died age 90 on January 17 after a great career as a noted satirist. He occupied a special berth: here was a bona fide Canadian TV super star but one who frequently. Worked on American TV in the hugely popular long running hit Hee Haw. The last time we met was about two years ago at salute to the late great Roger Abbott co-creator of RCAF.

James Bawden: September 2014
http://jamesbawden.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 26, 2014. 747: The Definitive Guide Is Just That. This is going to be a blockbuster of a Sunday with new and returning TV series busting out all over. But save some time - the best of the night is surely Discover Channel's 747: The Definitive Guide which premieres Sunday Sept. 28 at 8 pm. I'm trying to remember the first time I flew on a 747. It was in June 1972 when I was on a TV critics junket. The first portion was held in New York city and then it was on to L.A. - in a 747. There wa...

James Bawden: Smart TV: Rise Of The Machines
http://jamesbawden.blogspot.com/2015/06/smart-tv-rise-of-machines.html
Saturday, June 20, 2015. Smart TV: Rise Of The Machines. I wasn't so sure this series could ever be made," chuckles executive producer Carlo Massarella who helped create the gigantic Rise Of The Machines. Part One of this seven part hour series revs up on Discovery Monday June 22 at 7 pm. That's right - while other networks go to sleep for the summer with reruns Discovery is premiering one of its most ambitious and I should say costly sTV shows of the year. The result is frequently enthralling television.

James Bawden: Degrassi Lives! Again!
http://jamesbawden.blogspot.com/2015/06/degrassi-lives-again.html
Tuesday, June 9, 2015. Are you aware of the series Degrassi? A mom down the street asked me. She'd just heard the joyous news Degrassi which was facing cancellation has been saved yet again- this by Netflicks - a decision that will made our "Canadian" commercial networks as mad as hell. I was the first TV critic on the set of Kids Of Degrassi which creators Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood first presented way back in 1979. Well, I did and I never forgot it. Critics sitting with me said it obviously was Mastro...

James Bawden: October 2014
http://jamesbawden.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Sunday, October 26, 2014. Degrassi: A Canadian TV Success Story. Linda Schuyer and I, we go way, way back. I first met her when she was producing her first series The Kids Of Degrassi Street in 1979. I was still with The Hamilton Spectator in those days and Linda had until recently been a senior public school teacher at Earl Grey school in Riverdale. The Kids Of Degrassi ran over five seasons (until 1984) for a grand total of only 24 episodes. Schuyler still ribs me about the first time I visited her pro...
