MTA, Not Going Your Way
http://www.bloomzilla.com/mta.html
Why are there problems at the MTA? New York City does not pay a fair share of the MTA budget. Only 20% of 1980 levels. Mega-projects like the # 7 extension instead of clean stations. Fewer experienced subway and bus workers (for your safety and security) and more fly-by-night contracted services .blame Bloomberg. Bloomberg wanted MTA workers punished for striking and now, punished even more for going to arbitration .blame Bloomberg. Why is New York in Trouble? Why are there problems at the MTA?

Tuesday, 16 September 2014. March for Climate Change. On Sunday, September 21st, a huge crowd will march. As a few of the march’s organizers, though, we can give some sense of why we, at least, are marching, words we think represent many of those who will gather at Columbus Circle for the walk through midtown Manhattan. We march because the world has left the Holocene behind: scientists tell us that we’ve already raised the planet’s temperature almost one degree Celsius, and are on track. But since polar...

Wednesday, December 21, 2005. New York Transit Workers Strike. The 34,000 members of the Tranport Workers Union are on illegal strike in New York, under the most difficult of conditions. Workers of the Metropolitan Transit System were faced with the demand of management that they agree to a retirement age of 62 for all new starters, compared to 55 for current staff. Juan Gonzalez: Arrogance of the MTA made strike a certainty. The timing was especially tough for Casiano, who la...

City of Progress: November 2007
http://cityofprogress.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 26, 2007. So the Harold Washington post that had been germinating in my head for a while made it up onto Chicagoist. Salim Muwakkil had a great piece in In These Times. About the air of nostalgia surrounding Harold Washington's tenure. It may be comforting to dream of those days and gloat about the triumphs and the promise of that era. But the Washington years happened because people were not dreaming or awash in nostalgia—they were awake and active. I wonder if, in all the remembering.
