Who in their right mind...?: Boston - draft
http://speedyspeedracer.blogspot.com/2015/07/boston-draft.html
Friday, July 10, 2015. I started writing a race report, and the draft has been sitting on my desktop unfinished since April. I'm posting it here unedited for posterity. This is a story about having to work a lot harder than you thought for something. It is not so much a story of perseverance as it is a story of serendipity in the places you least expect it, and adversity in the places where you feel like life owed you a break. It is also a story about being really, really cold. Luckily, we weren’t ...

Who in their right mind...?: April 2012
http://speedyspeedracer.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 20, 2012. I've been gone for awhile. I'm saying this just in case you just woke up from a coma and don't know what year it is. If there's anyone left to read this, I'll be quite surprised. Why the long absence? I if I don't spend my whole life going long and slow and racing on the weekends? Life was getting in the way of my training, but the truth was that I was so far beyond burnt out that my bike seat became a very tedious place to sit. I got into Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) reluctantly....

Who in their right mind...?: Maffetone Method. Nope
http://speedyspeedracer.blogspot.com/2015/07/maffetone-method-nope.html
Friday, July 10, 2015. Maffetone Method. Nope. Mark "Grip" Allen claims that the Maffetone. Method of training helped him make the leap. From elite to unbeatable. That and some peyote. June - Where things really changed. July - Nails in the coffin. But what about the promise that your race performances would improve from running slower? If Maffetone (and the haters) were right, and high volume/high speed leads to overtraining, then my race performances shouldn’t drop off by as much. Maybe? My Boston Tria...

Who in their right mind...?: September 2013
http://speedyspeedracer.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Tuesday, September 10, 2013. The American Discovery Trail Marathon didn't turn out the way I had wanted it to. And I had worked too hard. And gotten too much faster. I must have walked over 5 miles in Colorado, so I didn't think. That I had pushed my body too hard, but the whole problem was that at 7000 ft, I had no idea. We could drive down Saturday and come back on Sunday.". I am the luckiest self-absorbed endurance athlete in the world. When I'm suffering, you can see it on my face. In. The race start...

Wednesday, May 29, 2013. Day 10: I am so fucking slow. Apparently I've become a pavement sissy. I always thought that those trail runners that tell stories like, "there was ONE MILE" of pavement in that 100 miler and now I have a stress fracture! Also making me unhappy indeed today was that the only miles I had been able to knock out at work were 1.7 miles walked while answering emails, so I had to run 16.9 miles consecutively without any snack breaks and all on hilly trails. Day 9 I am so fucking fast.

Who in their right mind...?: October 2011
http://speedyspeedracer.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 11, 2011. This week I came back to Boston for the first time since I moved. To San Francisco about 16 months ago. In all that time I had never had the desire to visit, especially since I was afraid that seeing many of my old friends would reopen wounds that were still tender. But it had to happen eventually, and so last Friday night I boarded a plane to revisit the site of the worst 6 months. I eventually ventured to ask. "Is it still a shithole, or have you guys done some work on it?

Tuesday, July 28, 2015. I was enjoying riding to work, but the quickest way to get there was on a bike trail (I know, I know, I HATE bike trails… but it cut 10 min of traffic lights off the trip! This is where our story begins. When I came to pick up my racing bike, they had forgotten to put new tires on. He first took me over to the super-skinny racing tires. “Aw, there’s no need,” I said. “I’m just going to be riding this thing to and from work.”. 8220;Oh, I know,” I said. “This bike ha...8220;No you d...
