March 8, 2014. My last week in Wadeye has flown by and I am left with a great sense of relief. I’m a little surprised by my reaction to finishing. Aside from the fact I am now 35 weeks pregnant, sick with another childcare lurgy and having trouble sleeping, I thought that I would be more sad to leave behind all the faces that I have come to know over the last year. March 1, 2014. Cases of the week. Working in Indigenous health (particularly remote) is unlike working anywhere else! A middle aged man with ...

Cases of the week. March 1, 2014. Working in Indigenous health (particularly remote) is unlike working anywhere else! Here are a few of the things I saw this week:. A young man with a huge knee joint effusion which came up after being hit by a spear (yep, a spear) in the thigh a week earlier and then being kicked by the policed (allegedly) the previous night. We weren’t sure if it was infected or just fluid. I did a joint aspirate and we sent him into Darwin. A 31 year old morbidly obese diabetic with po...

March 8, 2014. So that’s it for this week. I’ve still got lots of things I want to write about so it won’t be the end of this blog. The pics above are of some tshirts and fabric that I bought this week from the Wadeye Women’s Center. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. September 29, 2015. We recently got to spend 2 wonderful months back in Darwin for the dry season. One of my colleagues asked us to housesit, dogsit and jobsit while she went off to Europe for a couple of months. My partner managed to organise a project back at Danila Dilba and we scored a short term spot for the girls in child care. How could we possibly say no? March 8, 2014. March 1, 2014. Flying in the wet. February 22, 2014. We have had some heavy rain and wild weather recently. In the last few weeks I have had one flight return to Darwin after being unable to land (and yes the co-pilot and several passengers did vomit), two weeks of cancelled flights to Daly River because of flooding, one aborted take-off attempt and one blo wn tyr. E resulting in a bogged plane! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:. Next Post →.

Adventures of a Rural Locum. This entry was posted on September 8, 2014, in Life. After more than a year of stepping off aeroplanes and into unknown adventures, there is something nice about being met at the baggage carousel by a friendly face and a welcome home. Well, not technically home. But certainly starting to feel that way. Particularly awesome is how much easier working with the local hospital becomes when every phone call starts with Mate! We must catch up for a drink sometime. Happy for you &#4...

Adventures of a Rural Locum. This entry was posted on June 14, 2014, in Leisure. There are some times as a locum when I have to pinch myself and think “Really? Am I actually getting. Wow, what a life! 8221; Spending three weeks in Broome for my latest work trip was one of those times. And I’m pleased to report that this latest visit has certainly lived up to my high expectations. In contrast to the multitude of barefoot backpackers and the scruffy mob of locals, there is also an ultra elite side to Broom...

Adventures of a Rural Locum. All That Glitters Is Not Gold. I’m into my second year as a locum now and my search continues for the perfect country town to call home. After a fairly length break from clinical work, 2014 kicked off with a four week stint in the wild west town of Kalgoorlie. Kalgoorlie is an historic gold rush town, established alongside the “Golden Mile,” … Continue reading →. Pure Gold – the SMACC Experience. A Granddaughter’s Grief. Adventures of a Rural Locum. Feeling at Home in Hedland. This entry was posted on May 9, 2014, in Life. When I told people that I was going to work in Port Hedland for a few weeks, the typical response was a wrinkled nose, a sympathetic murmur, or a well meaning warning … “you know it’s a bit of a shithole, right? There is no doubt that the day-to-day practice of medicine involves a fair amount of. However, in the somewhat sterile world of the doctor’s consulting room, it is rare privilege to encounter “the arts” of the more creative, rather than clinical kind. July 13, 2010. On the 12th of July 2010, apparently, at 1 AM, Harvey Pekar passed away. I haven’t read too much of Harvey Pekar and whatever I know about him is through the movie ‘American Splendor’ which was based on his life. I really did like what I saw in the movie and Harvey seemed like a brilliant guy for walking out on Letterman and writing the stuff he wrote. He’d maybe say the same about dying.
