City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. June 05, 2006. It's not a dry heat (or is it? Posted by Matt @ 10:12 PM. June 04, 2006. I am back in Cairo after another whirlwind trip away. I first spent four days visiting friends in Oxford and participating in their formal (and "solemn") graduation ceremony; then I returned to the U.S., where I attended my brother's wonderful wedding weekend. What a fun, beautiful, and heady few days that was. Posted by Matt @ 6:27 PM. View my complete profile.

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. October 28, 2005. The Pyramids (with photos! Last Friday at a Fulbright party, I met one of last year's scholars, who is an Egyptologist working on her PhD dissertation. Over drinks and sheesha, she offered to take a bunch of us out to the pyramids for a special personal tour. So we got up really early, loaded up on coffee, and went out. This photo above is our wonderful guide, Jackie. And here is the group:. Posted by Matt @ 7:57 PM. October 25, 2005.

City of the Living: September 2005
http://matt-in-cairo.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html
City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. September 27, 2005. Lars and I have settled on a flat. I think it's a great deal: we live in the center of Doqqi, on the 10th floor of a nice, clean building; we have two sizable bedrooms, a brand new kitchen, an extremely large, open living/dining room (with a few different areas for sitting and shmoozing); a working fireplace (? I have a small screened-in balcony off my bedroom. We have a washer and good a/c and satellite TV. I'm a bit too exhausted t...

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. January 22, 2006. Hollywood Stars, Sharm El Sheikh. This was meant to be the first post on my trip to Sharm El-Sheikh. Due to internet issues, however, it is a bit late.). Me: American sax player. Not a regular in the Riff Band. Along for ride. Ahmad Harfoosh: Cairo big-shot. Egyptian. Takes himself and his singing career extremely seriously. Has a nice voice but doesn't realize that he is cheesy. Orest: Ukrainian trombonist. Also a pro with the Cai...

City of the Living: November 2005
http://matt-in-cairo.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_archive.html
City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. November 30, 2005. We're actually having an unseasonal heat/humidity wave here in Cairo. It's pretty sticky out there. And the pollution is terrible. I'm glad I got a little bit of Northeast US winter crispness whilst back home. Posted by Matt @ 4:42 PM. November 18, 2005. Matt-in-Cairo is taking a break, while I'm home in the U.S. for about 10 days. And I'm off. See you in two weeks or so. Posted by Matt @ 12:50 AM. November 13, 2005. Here is the insid...

City of the Living: December 2005
http://matt-in-cairo.blogspot.com/2005_12_01_archive.html
City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. December 31, 2005. I just returned last night from a wonderful week-long vacation in Israel. More thoughts on this trip, as well as photos, will be posted shortly. Suffice it to say that my return to Israel, after 11 years, was wonderful and interesting and thought-provoking in many ways. Within 12 hours of my return to Cairo, I got a surprising phone-call: an offer to record a song in a studio for Egyptian pop-star Heba Mokhtar. December 19, 2005.

Frogwatcher: Media, Culture and Me, in France. Thursday, March 30, 2006. That phrase will forever be colored in my mind by the end of "Can't Harldy Wait" or "American Pie" (it plays as an amalgam of teen films in my head), that scene when they're all in the diner the day after the party and they toast to the end of their high school days and the beginning of the big adventure, "the next step.". Hope y'all like it. A plus, mes chers amis. Posted by johnnydgood at 7:49 AM. Bernard n. shull. Tom Wolfe has g...

City of the Living: February 2006
http://matt-in-cairo.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html
City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. February 11, 2006. Pandemonium; Cab rides. Egypt won the African Cup of Nations tonight by a score of 2-1 over Cote d'Ivoire. The game was, from what I can tell (I admittedly don't know much about soccer), fairly boring, and not particularly well played. Egypt has a habit of just lobbing the ball into the other team's zone, hoping for some mistake to be made by the other team, instead of controlling the ball and setting up plays. February 07, 2006.
