Unincumbered

Wednesday, June 21, 2006. Posted by johnnydgood at 4:53 AM. Saturday, June 17, 2006. Here s a little thing I wrote in a moment of frustration after three weeks of being a tourist. It s a little rant, fed mostly by the omnipresent specter of the Lonely Planet that hovers over my time here. It also doesn t accurately represent my time here, which, over all, has been amazing:. What does it mean to be young and a tourist? What is a tourist, anyway? Experience the life, blood and rust of Argentina here! This ...

Unincumbered: la fracture sociale (that´s French, but whatever)

http://www.unincumbered.blogspot.com/2006/06/la-fracture-sociale-thats-french-but.html

Monday, June 05, 2006. La fracture sociale (that s French, but whatever). This morning s breakfast was in the sun on the hotel s deck overlooking the water, palm and banana trees. It was like a private suite with two people who prepared coffee and tostadas for us and us alone. Oh, to be rich. Posted by johnnydgood at 8:42 AM. I have nothing but time. View my complete profile. Viajar en Argentina hoy. Nuthin to do nowhere to go. A bas la précarité! On my own two feet.

Unincumbered: La Chute

http://www.unincumbered.blogspot.com/2006/04/la-chute.html

Monday, April 17, 2006. In other news, I'm reading my way through several French classics as a way to say arriva derci to gai Paris. So far I've done Maupassant's "Pierre et Jean" and Albert Camus' "La Chute". Next up: "Au Bonheur des Dames" by Emile Zola. Posted by johnnydgood at 8:33 AM. I, for one, am happy to hear that you were not eaten by any bears. Sounds like a great trip! I have nothing but time. View my complete profile. A bas la précarité! On my own two feet.

Unincumbered: April 2006

http://www.unincumbered.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 27, 2006. Our landlady just came by, took a quick look at her empty apartment, our pathetic little pair of inflatable mattresses pushed together to make a double bed, our impeccable cauking and cleaning job, and she declared that we will be getting back all of our deposit. And then she wrote the check! Never in the history of man has being responsible and conscientious felt - or paid - so good. Now it's off to blow it all at the bar, on dinner, and at a jazz club. Tuesday, April 25, 2006.

Unincumbered: March 2006

Thursday, March 30, 2006. A bas la précarité! At this point, so close to leaving, I feel distant from France. We've had a long relationship, France and I, but now she's doing this crazy thing, being so France, and I feel glad that it's ending. And I always know that she's there for a good booty call. Posted by johnnydgood at 11:48 PM. Wednesday, March 29, 2006. On my own two feet. So I can return unincumbered to the good ol' US of A; visiting New York City, my lovely parents, doting dog, famous brother.

Unincumbered: Nuthin to do nowhere to go

http://www.unincumbered.blogspot.com/2006/04/nuthin-to-do-nowhere-to-go.html

Tuesday, April 25, 2006. Nuthin to do nowhere to go. Posted by johnnydgood at 2:03 AM. Did you sell everything? Except for stuff we found on the street. I guess other people aren't as used to the sweet aroma of urine as we've become. Congratulations on the sale. It sounds like you've been reading a little of good ol' Stephen Kern. I have nothing but time. View my complete profile. A bas la précarité! On my own two feet.

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. June 05, 2006. It's not a dry heat (or is it? Posted by Matt @ 10:12 PM. June 04, 2006. I am back in Cairo after another whirlwind trip away. I first spent four days visiting friends in Oxford and participating in their formal (and "solemn") graduation ceremony; then I returned to the U.S., where I attended my brother's wonderful wedding weekend. What a fun, beautiful, and heady few days that was. Posted by Matt @ 6:27 PM. View my complete profile.

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. October 28, 2005. The Pyramids (with photos! Last Friday at a Fulbright party, I met one of last year's scholars, who is an Egyptologist working on her PhD dissertation. Over drinks and sheesha, she offered to take a bunch of us out to the pyramids for a special personal tour. So we got up really early, loaded up on coffee, and went out. This photo above is our wonderful guide, Jackie. And here is the group:. Posted by Matt @ 7:57 PM. October 25, 2005.

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. September 27, 2005. Lars and I have settled on a flat. I think it's a great deal: we live in the center of Doqqi, on the 10th floor of a nice, clean building; we have two sizable bedrooms, a brand new kitchen, an extremely large, open living/dining room (with a few different areas for sitting and shmoozing); a working fireplace (? I have a small screened-in balcony off my bedroom. We have a washer and good a/c and satellite TV. I'm a bit too exhausted t...

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. November 30, 2005. We're actually having an unseasonal heat/humidity wave here in Cairo. It's pretty sticky out there. And the pollution is terrible. I'm glad I got a little bit of Northeast US winter crispness whilst back home. Posted by Matt @ 4:42 PM. November 18, 2005. Matt-in-Cairo is taking a break, while I'm home in the U.S. for about 10 days. And I'm off. See you in two weeks or so. Posted by Matt @ 12:50 AM. November 13, 2005. Here is the insid...

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. December 31, 2005. I just returned last night from a wonderful week-long vacation in Israel. More thoughts on this trip, as well as photos, will be posted shortly. Suffice it to say that my return to Israel, after 11 years, was wonderful and interesting and thought-provoking in many ways. Within 12 hours of my return to Cairo, I got a surprising phone-call: an offer to record a song in a studio for Egyptian pop-star Heba Mokhtar. December 19, 2005.

Frogwatcher: Media, Culture and Me, in France. Thursday, March 30, 2006. That phrase will forever be colored in my mind by the end of "Can't Harldy Wait" or "American Pie" (it plays as an amalgam of teen films in my head), that scene when they're all in the diner the day after the party and they toast to the end of their high school days and the beginning of the big adventure, "the next step.". http://matt-in-cairo.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. February 11, 2006. Pandemonium; Cab rides. Egypt won the African Cup of Nations tonight by a score of 2-1 over Cote d'Ivoire. The game was, from what I can tell (I admittedly don't know much about soccer), fairly boring, and not particularly well played. Egypt has a habit of just lobbing the ball into the other team's zone, hoping for some mistake to be made by the other team, instead of controlling the ball and setting up plays. February 07, 2006.
