Maui Jungalow: Taro vs. Elephant Ear (Telling Them Apart)
http://www.mauijungalow.com/2012/03/taro-vs-elephant-ear-telling-them-apart.html
Wednesday, March 7, 2012. Taro vs. Elephant Ear (Telling Them Apart). Will the real taro leaf please stand up? Both leaves are invitingly heart-shaped, veined, soft to touch, and large. Rain drops after a passing shower collect easily on both leaves, but only one leaf is edible. The taro plant has been cultivated in Hawaii for centuries, and is a staple of local cuisine. The green taro leaf is used in making lau lau, a local dish. The elephant ear plant (also known as 'ape). How do I know this? As it tur...

Maui Jungalow: Teeny Red Hawaiian Chili Peppers
http://www.mauijungalow.com/2012/11/teeny-red-hawaiian-chili-peppers.html
Saturday, November 24, 2012. Teeny Red Hawaiian Chili Peppers. It’s kind of fun (and kind of mean) to invite someone to take a bite out of a little red Hawaiian chili pepper. Even if the victim claims to like hot things, the hot zing from this teeny innocuous pepper usually makes the victim’s head turn red with vents of steam coming out of the ears. Ok, I exaggerate, but these darn little things are hot! By the way, this blog post is a response to MauiShopGirl's "Red" picture challenge. After some trial ...

Tuesday, February 17, 2015. Little Beach Closed Due to Potential Bomb. The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) asked beachgoers at Little Beach this afternoon to leave the beach due to a possible bomb they discovered. They asked people not to touch the wires at the beginning of the trail, the access path from Big Beach to Little Beach. They also closed off part of Big Beach closest to Little Beach and said a bomb expert is scheduled to investigate the wires tomorrow. Is there really a bomb?

Sunday, August 9, 2015. Life on Kauai vs. Life on Maui. A month or so ago, E. asked on email what I thought were the differences between Maui and Kauai, not for tourists but for residents. This topic is one I’ve thought about off and on, especially after blogging about life on Maui vs. Oahu. Yes Kauai is quiet. Quiet. Which sounds a lot like the word Kauai. . Posted by Courtney Turner. Maui Jungalow: Maui Deer Gone Amok: Trouble in Paradise
http://www.mauijungalow.com/2013/06/maui-deer-gone-amok-trouble-in-paradise.html
Thursday, June 6, 2013. Maui Deer Gone Amok: Trouble in Paradise. This is the first in a series called Trouble in Paradise. In recent years, the deer population has exploded on Maui. Deer on Maui? I’ve heard deer stories on the mainland, about deer who wander into garden beds and eat all the tulips and rose bushes and vegetables, deer who eat all the young forest saplings leaving nothing but ferns everywhere. Bad, bad deer, who often can’t be hunted in residential communities. Michael Tavares of the Maui...
